Charts: Latest Japanese Software & Hardware Sales

Posted by - Mar 7th 2007 01:46

While Japan campaigns with a new Fire Emblem, the PSP gets a certifiable new hit in the week ending February 25th.

Courtesy of Media-Create, we have the most recent sales figures from Japan.

Surging software sales for the week were paced by Capcom's Monster Hunter Portable 2nd which moved over 700k units. The game is the sequel to the PSP's best selling title to date. Excitement for the game even spilled over into hardware sales, and it is likely MHP2 will be one of the rare PSP titles that garner sustained interest (a short list that includes the likes of Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops and, of course, the first Monster Hunter Portable).

The week also brought several notable new releases on Nintendo platforms. Debuting for the Wii were Fire Emblem: Goddess of Dawn and a new fighting game based on the popular anime series Naruto. Meanwhile, Electronic Arts graced the DS with a special version of Sim City. Fans of the city-building series will be excited to find a portable build that has been optimized with the DS' strengths in mind. The historically West-focused EA has several other DS titles in the pipeline that they feel will appeal to Japanese gamers, most notably a stylized version of The Sims that features cuter character models.

On the hardware front, though the PSP surged above Nintendo's Wii, the DS Lite would not be dethroned. Much maligned as of late, the portable Playstation nevertheless is outpacing its beefy brother, the PS3. Expect the pecking order to resume its usual order next week: it will be a while before Monster Hunter Portable 3rd sees its inevitable release.

The weekly software numbers follow:

Nice to se more than just the wii games play and sports in the charts.
Apparently PS3 sold 40,000 this week due in part to the game Gundam Musou.
I still find it strange PS3 sales are so low, surely there isn't still a shortage.

No there isn't a shortage (at least not in the US); it seems that people just aren't buying them right now. As much as I would like to gloat about that, sales will probably shoot through the roof when some better games come out, and/or the price goes down. This time next year PS3 sales will probably decimate all. Plus the whole Blu-ray Vs HD-DVD thing is maybe putting people off too.

Looking forward to Sim City DS. I'm not sure about blowing into the mic to put out fires though.

I think the 'blowing into the mic' feature spoils some games. MarioKart DS' usage is acceptable, but does make you light-headed.

Nice to see a balance of games from publishers in the top ten. Show them that it is not just Nintendo games that sell well on their platforms.

Naruto had good first weeks sales as did Fire Emblem, Monster Hunter is so crap yet it sells unbelievably well, looks like bad games sell well regardless of territory.

Just for the record, I live in Japan and there is NO shortage of PS3 here, it is widely available but nobody is buying.

It may well increase over time, but Sony is losing so much right now, it lives on numbers that is numbers of consoles in homes, all those 3rd party devs know this and they are all probably worrying right now if they are developing something for the ps3 because no doubt it is costing them a lot of money.

The only console right now that is selling well in all areas is the Wii, the 360 is a dead duck here, the ps3 not much better.

OMG, Sony must feel dizzy after that surge in PSP sales, seems kinda strange seeing above the Wii
