Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown hits June 5

Sega sets fighting game's downloadable debut on Xbox Live and PlayStation Network for the week of E3, $15 price point and DLC customization packs confirmed.

It has been five years since the last new Virtua Fighter game debuted on consoles, but the wait for a new installment in Sega's flagship fighting franchise ends next month. Sega today announced that Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown will arrive on the PlayStation Network on June 5, with an Xbox Live Arcade release set for June 6.

Described as an update and expansion to previous versions of the game, Final Showdown will sell for $15 (1,200 Microsoft points) on each system's downloadable storefront. In addition to new modes, arenas, and customizable character items, the game will add two more combatants to the game's roster. Virtua Fighter veterans will welcome the return of Virtua Fighter 3 sumo wrestler Taka-Arashi, while those eager to try out a new style can look forward to the debut of Jean Kujo.

Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown will also feature online multiplayer action for both systems. Sega has promised "little to no latency" for online matches, with leaderboards to keep track of rank. For more solitary fighters, Final Showdown will also include a new single-player mode where players fight "an army of opponents" on their own.

Sega is also planning a variety of downloadable content in the form of character customization packs available at launch. Players will be able to buy character-specific content for each of the game's 19 characters for $5 (400 Microsoft points) per pack, or they can purchase two bundles of customization DLC, each selling for $15 (1,200 Microsoft points) and covering about half of the game's roster.

VF5+Update only 15 bucks? Oh Capcom...you confuse your greed with cannibalism! P

Godokuno_Dan 8 pts

I'm just glad this  game is finally coming out.  DLC retail disc, whatever. SEGA lost mad money on  VF5, It only sold 250K on PS3 and ~250K on 360.  They cant make a retail disc of FS, Print 2 million copies, and only sell less than 250K .  That is bad business, Even a 6 year old has enough common sense to know that.  My only gripe is the simplified throw system, but that is the arcade teams fault, not the console devs. Thanks SEGA, our prayers are answered!!   Thanks to KAAMAGE ( japanese Star VF player) for starting the VF5 R petition and presenting it to SEGA.

Good luck to all of you.  I will see you on the battlefield, both online and offline.  Osu!

chikahiro94 133 pts

Godokuno_Dan Wait, they simplified the throw system? When did this happen? I'm soo out of the loop... so its possible for semi-sane people to escape throws?

Virtua_Souls 54 pts

chikahiro94 Yes, in VF5FS, AM2 simplified it. There are only 3 throw directions in FS: Neutral (Just pressing P+G), forward, and back. So any throw will use a form of those inputs to execute (Except low throws that grab crouching foes. Those are now done with either down-forward, down or down-back and P+G).

Since there are only 3 standing throw directions now, you can also only escape 1 throw direction at a time, but they make up for this by making throw escapes much easier in VF5FS. You can just hold block AND the punch button plus a direction to escape. Much easier, and no risk of lowering your guard! :)

chikahiro94 133 pts

Virtua_Souls Interesting! I'm not sure how I feel about that... advanced players would've been used to a variety of multi-option escapes, but now only have 1 escape so its more of a guessing/estimating game than before (as opposed to execution). But for lower-level players (like me - playing since VF1 and still consider myself a scrub), it seems like the throwing game will be quite different! Hmm...

So, even Wolf and Jeffery and such don't have PKG throws? Wow... interesting.

If it gets more players, though, I'll be quite happy, and consider it a trade-off worth making.

!5 dollars for this game is a good deal. June 15th is not that far away.

jtthegame316 25 pts

yes i can't wait i have more than enough points on my xbox account waiting for final showdown

mrklorox 10 pts

Wow. I was totally expecting it to be $20, and would have paid that easily.

Mizkreant 10 pts

Only $15? This is a great deal for players, but I worry Sega won't make enough money to justify bringing more VF to North America. Hopefully, since it's so cheap, even people who don't think they like VF will buy it.

leeko_link 108 pts

Awesome but to be honest I really want Virtua Fighter 6, not an upgrade to VF5.

chikahiro94 133 pts

leeko_link Well, given AM2 moves very slowly with changing the system or adding characters, this is as good as it'll get for a while. I mean, jeez, they only add two characters per major iteration (VF2, VF3, VF4, VF4:Evo, VF5, VF5:FS)...

Given how long VF games last and how unpopular they are globally, I don't think we'll see a VF6 until next generation :(

0m39AX 10 pts

That'll be a definite buy. But I'd also love to see a new Fighting Vipers, or a new Fighters Megamix.

And, of course, we'd love to see something close to this kind of fighting action in Shenmue 3, if it ever comes out.

Dark_Metamorphosis 17 pts

Is this a full game? Or will I need a copy of VF5 as well?

Virtua_Souls 54 pts

 Dark_Metamorphosis VF5FS is a full game. You don't need a copy of VF5. Amazing deal, huh? :)

chikahiro94 133 pts

Dark_Metamorphosis As Virtua_Souls said, its the full game. Consider it to be like games that come out at $60, then when they hit the $20 "Greatest Hits" release, its the same game with most, if not all, the DLC. Its utterly fantastic, IMO, and I really wish Capcom would do this for their fighters.

Dark_Metamorphosis 17 pts

chikahiro94 Great deal indeed. I'll be picking this up in that case :)

Blaze_Firestorm 8 pts

Finally online Virtua Fighter. Been craving some VF action and nobody I know plays this. Thanks Sega! Now gimme Shenmue

chikahiro94 133 pts

Blaze_Firestorm Online play will hopefully be good! Certainly, its probably the most important feature that Sega could've added!

TheArcade 87 pts

This game is so hard to master it hurts my brain even at casual play. But I still love it, I still love Sega, and I still love Virtua Fighter series.

AM2 FTW.

Virtua_Souls 54 pts

AWESOME! I can't wait for June 5th! JUST $15 for the game?? Deal of the century! Most fighters would charge $60 for what Sega is giving us for $15. You're the best, Sega! Day 1 purchase!

xcollector 24 pts

I don't like the 1200 point range because MS exchange rate is unrealistic. 1200points (15USD) = 17.15CAD before taxes ($20 after taxes). The year is 2012 and the US dollar is on par with the Canadian. If this was a retail game for $15USD it would be $15CAD in Canada. If I could buy a US 1600 point card for $20USD then I wouldn't complain. But MS uses different codes and Canadian's have been stuck with 1400 point cards for $20 since the beginning. And they are probably wondering why not every one likes digital. Digital can be very anti-consumer when the company involved controls the currency exchange rates.

chikahiro94 133 pts

xcollector I can sympathize. There's a lot about digital that doesn't make sense, but I think the retail market and the old ways of doing things (tied to physical media) figure in too. There's no technical reason why all English speaking countries can't have the same game, the same day, at the same price, for instance. But there are plenty of legal reasons :/

chikahiro94 133 pts

http://youtu.be/FnSS4YsEm2E - new video. The interface for customization looks a LOT better than before, and Taka's stage looks fantastic! Hoping the tutorial mode is equal to VF4/VF4:Evo's standard setting tutorial.

Very thrilled her. I can hardly wait to get my hands on it... Very glad I upgraded my stick, too ^_^

TheTHCGamer 5 pts

@TheCyborgNinja agreed i hate having to deal with Digital downloads because i cant bring the game with me to other consoles.  On top of that im pretty damn sure if the next generation of consoles is backwards compatible i wont be able to play this game.  I also just love having the case, instructions and disc you know an actual physical copy of the game.

chikahiro94 133 pts

TheTHCGamer  TheCyborgNinja I can understand that. The trick is would they have bothered bringing VF5:FS out if they could only do it as a boxed, retail product or not? Its not a popular game, sadly (it deserves to be!).

I wonder if it came out retail in Japan or not? PS3 owners and maybe 360 owners (if Sega released it without region locking) could get it then.

Virtua_Souls 54 pts

chikahiro94 It was actually only released in arcades in Japan. The June 5th release is the first time that VF5FS has ever been out on consoles. And heck yeah, VF deserves so much more popularity! It's such an amazing, fair fighter!

TheArcade 87 pts

 Virtua_Souls  chikahiro94

You're talking about the one that came out in '06-'07? Because there was another VF5 that got released besides this one. PS3 got version B, 360 has version C.

This next release  puts both consoles on even footing. I'm interested in seeing how the online turns out. They better allow you to switch characters in online Vs. It was stupid the way they set-up online in the last game. You were essentially stuck with one character.

chikahiro94 133 pts

TheArcade Yeah, I feel that PS3 owners got a raw deal from Sega. Honestly, if it was from a company other than Sega? Whatever. But this is Sega of the Dreamcast, Sega.net, etc. They had pioneered consoles and the use of online, so what could've been an "oversight" was less tolerable, IMO. Of course, the Sega of old and the Sega today are pretty different animals :(

Virtua_Souls 54 pts

TheTHCGamer Digital download is the only way Sega could release the game. With Sega's recent financial troubles, VF5FS may have been cancelled if it had been a retail release. I'd love to have a case, disc, etc. too, but c'mon, man! It's $15! What other company will give you a fighter as feature rich as VF5FS for $15? :)

chikahiro94 133 pts

This is fantastic news! I hate to say it, but given how niche a title VF is in the western market, going downloadable instead of retail makes total sense. That said? At that price, I'll be able to buy a copy for a friend or two and introduce them to the wonders of VF. My only major wish would be a Windows version on Steam with Steam/PSN online play. Although I'm a 360 owner, I do have a PC, and honestly? I care far more about this game than the platform its on. I'm a VF fanboy, not a 360 or PS3 fanboy, and cross-platform play is something the not only the VF series needs, but the entire fighting game genre.

TheCyborgNinja 106 pts

I'd rather pay $40 and get a disc.

chikahiro94 133 pts

TheCyborgNinja Well, me too, but at the same time? Discs get lost, damaged, etc. Plus, they go out of print. There are some perks to digital that discs don't have yet. Of course, ideally, it'd be buy the game, get the disc AND get a digital copy if you're the original owner.

Shinobi120 43 pts

chikahiro94TheCyborgNinja

TheCyborgNinja, I agree, especially when this game is nothing more than a upgrade off of VF 5 & VF 5:R, both released on July 12, 2006 (VF 5), & July 24, 2008 (VF 5: R).

Plus this port of this upgrade's been made in the Arcades on July 29, 2010 (VF 5: final Showdown). I highly doubt that it would cost Sega much money to port this title with everything included like the Arcade version did (instead of selling costumes as DLC WHEN THEY WERE ALREADY IN THE ARCADE VERSION IN THE 1ST PLACE!), & put it up for retail for $30 for PS3 & 360.

Chikahiro94, you can always get discs repaired & fixed, plus you can always find another copy used should your disc gets lost. No offense, but I like to own copy of games, because it guarantees me that I'll be able to play those same games that I bought years down the road (just like my NES, SNES, Genesis, Saturn, Dreamcast, PS1 & PS2 games).

chikahiro94 133 pts

Shinobi120 I don't trust repairs (and eventually you may get to the point its unrepairable), and back in 2005 I tried finding additional copies of VF4 or VF4:Evo for some friends of mine on the PS2, new or used. No luck for either. But, like I said, ideally there'd be a retail box with a digital copy for the original buyer - best of both worlds.

Main problem with disc based systems is moving parts eventually fail. I miss cartridges in that regard, but not enough to want to go back to them as a media format. My old Neo Geo was my most beloved system ever, but I do NOT want to pay those kinds of prices again. Hell, I remember how much games dropped in price when they went from cartridges to CD... @_@

Richardthe3rd 131 pts

Good deal for a great game.  Can't pass that up.

RavenXavier 53 pts

You can't beat a deal like this if you've ever been a Virtua Fighter fan. I'll be picking this up on XBox live Arcade :) . Thanks for being cool on the price of something for once Sega!!!

chikahiro94 133 pts

RavenXavier Its a win/win, definitely! We get a great price, they get more money than if they sold it retail, it'll never be out of print, etc. My only wish would be if they gave PS3 owners a special something since Sega didn't give them online play or the ability to upgrade to version C via DLC (Japanese companies seem bad about taking advantage of online at times). But, still, at THIS price I think I'll just ahead and be happy for all the VF fans of the world ^_^

Legend002 25 pts

Only $15 for a current gen updated game? Thank you!

Also on XBLA, does this mean only 400GS?  The original VF5 had 1000GS...

Virtua_Souls 54 pts

Legend002 Yes, since it's an XBLA arcade title, it will have the new 400GS. That's the best Sega could do :)

Metamania 10 pts

This is going to be awesome! Looking forward to it!

S_Pac_316 24 pts

I would like to have it be a retail game instead of DLC...but ok.

Also,if it took this long for it to be made, why not they have made it a sequel instead? :P

chikahiro94 133 pts

S_Pac_316 VF5 is still played in Japanese arcades. Sega usually releases a number of pretty  meaningful updates over the years, keeping the game going for a long time because its well supported and very well balanced (ie, the gap between tiers isn't nearly as severe as other games). VF:FS is the 5th version of VF5 since release (original, verA, verB, verC, FS).

I've heard this will be the last VF5 update, and possibly the last VF for a while. We'll see. I hope we'll have one next generation!
