Uncharted 3 getting co-op survival mode

Eddie Makuch
By Eddie Makuch, News Editor

Naughty Dog reveals new game type for last year's adventure title on the way in March; new map pack out now.

Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception will welcome a new game mode in March, the developer has announced. The co-op Shade Survival game type for the adventure title will debut as downloadable content next month.

Outside of publishing the DLC's first screenshot (at right), Naughty Dog did not share further information regarding the content, save for calling it "fiery."

Gamers won't have to wait until March to get their hands on new content for Uncharted 3, however. The Flashback Map Pack 2 was released today on the PlayStation Network as a free download for Fortune Hunters' Club members, or $10 otherwise. That content includes four multiplayer maps from previous Uncharted games sporting new lighting effects, as well as other visual updates.

The co-op Shade Survival mode will also be a free download for members of the Fortune Hunters' Club, a pre-purchase system that gives players all Uncharted 3 DLC at a discounted rate.

I know this will get hate, but UC3...not as good as UC2. I love UC2 and think it is my favorite game of this generation. But something was off on UC3, parts of it were brilliant, but things just were out of place. The ship graveyard was cool, but they should have saved it for another game. Not enough time spent in the desert IMO. Also, i read that the guy doing the motion capture/voice work for Cutter got a role in the Hobbit and had to leave, and that originally they meant for Cutter to be with Drake and Sully at the end...that would have been great. Also, Marlow should have been more present. Still dont misunderstand me, I love UC...think the multiplayer is severely underrated, and will be buying the next console UC whenever it may be (hoping they hold off and make it a ps4 title maybe for the second year of the ps4 or first if ps4 isnt out till 2014).

I'd literally buy anything from Naughty Dog. I respect this studio and their work. It's like gamers making games for gamers.

Love the Uncharted series, every game of this type deserves a GOOD survival mode, not tacked on.

Love the Uncharted series. Hate prepay season passes for DLC and refuse to buy them. Why? Because throwback maps are imminent. I already bought these maps. Because I bought Uncharted 2 and its DLC.

Really have no idea what you are trying to say, try being less ambiguous. My comment still stands, The story is so cliched and the gameplay so predictable.

@Lordcrabfood, You must have skipped the MW3 section. The only logical explanation to your comment.

    @Ratchet8568

Lastly, the new survival co-op mode is basically a new take on Gears of War's horde mode. That isn't necessarily a bad thing, so long as Naughty Dog have added their OWN twists and ingenius designs into it. Uncharted 3 won GOTY from gametrailers.com thanks to its sublime story, script, dialogue, characters, gameplay (new additions such as the ability to throw back grenades and a more polished stealth combat just add more depth to it) but most important of all, the exhaustive multiplayer which will keep you coming back for more. Gears of War 3 won NO GOTY awards.

    EPIC: Cheque please?

    Posted Mar 1, 2012 10:59 pm GMT

    @Ratchet8568

They couldn't have added it to the Blu-ray disk because Uncharted 3 takes up 50 GB. Also, DLC is "not part" of the original game concept. It is designed to give gamers "more to come back to". If DLC didn't exist then game sales would effectively end within 4 weeks of a game's release. I mean imagine how big MGS 4 could've been if Konami had bothered to provide DLC for it? MGS 4 is the second best selling exclusive on the PS3 (4.5 million sales) and if had DLC support then those figures would be higher. The reason why we have a huge online community IS because of DLC!

    @BryanParksSuper

Developers have deadlines they must meet and it happens that more often than not, things they planned to add end up getting cut. They just use the DLC method to add the cut stuff later, albeit by charging us extra due to having to pay the programmers extra + plain greed.

Yes, DLC has gotten ridiculous and more often than not we're getting charged way too much for such content, but as long as this still works for them, we're stuck with it.

I got UC3 Free when I bought my 320GB PS3. This mode and old maps shoulda been included on the disc. Yeah let's pull a Activision from MW2 and release old maps. Naughty Dog fails so hard. I hardly even play UC3 anyway. There are better games out there than UC Franchise.

  • BryanParksSuper

    Posted Feb 25, 2012 4:11 pm GMT

$10 for DLC are serious Naughty Dog? Screw you ND.

  • BryanParksSuper

    Posted Feb 25, 2012 1:20 pm GMT

I haven't bought any UC3 DLC cause there just old maps from UC2. ND has handled there DLC poorly. We want new maps not old maps. MW2 did this and I didn't even purchase that DLC.

This is both new AND original. Props to Naughty for coming up with something fresh and exciting!

Also, a new map pack? NEW?

"That content includes four multiplayer maps from previous Uncharted games sporting new lighting effects, as well as other visual updates."

    New, huh?

So some slight visual updates to old content suddenly makes it count as new content now? Apparently so.

@csofran2 What I mean is that they probably had this planned for a while (before they released U3) so they could have put it in the disc. Straight after U3 they started working on dlc for U3. That is what annoys me. I'll buy it but I wish they included everything on the disc (that goes for every other game as well).

  • lex_in_the_moon

    Posted Feb 22, 2012 5:22 pm GMT

Message to those who complain even though I feel your pain: If all this extra stuff did end up coming with the disc then I can bet people would be complaining about the delayed release date that would come as a result.

  • csofran2

    Posted Feb 22, 2012 1:37 pm GMT

I'm so happy I decided to get the Fortune Hunter's pack, I'm getting way more goodness then I thought I would!!!!! And NO the game is not incomplete in any way. It's amazing just as it is outside the box without the dlc, but if you got that also... Heaven!!!!

  • Lhomity

    Posted Feb 21, 2012 6:30 pm GMT

Naughty Dog continues to support the game, expanding it and extending the time gamers can get out of it by offering optional, additional content, and half these comments are over-entitled whiners. Its depressing.

PC games have had expansions, map packs and all sorts of stuff like this for many years, now we have DLC on console games, and suddenly it's a consumer rights issue; like somehow the game you purchased is not complete if the devs offer additional content. What a load of spoiled, greedy, over-entitled crap, typical of children who have no understanding of the gaming industry or business in general.

U3 came out like 5 months ago. You should be grateful Naughty Dog are still supporting the game and offering DLC for it. If you don't want it, don't buy it. Just, for the love of all things sane, shut up about DLC. It doesn't make your game incomplete.

    "...with new lightning effects..."

Even when you know just the slightest bit about programming, calibrating the Gamma Scale is one of the biggest lazyjobs ever...and then they want to be payd for that? Woah ND.... :/

@Everyone who thinks this is regular survival mode:

It's not. There is technically a survival mode in U3; it's just mashed up with the other co-op modes from U2 other than Co-op Adventure.

  • Rioichi21Cooper

    Posted Feb 21, 2012 1:56 pm GMT

This should have been included with UC3 anyway, this is so pointless. They're just making profit for ridiculous reasons.

  • 23Jarek23

    Posted Feb 21, 2012 1:29 pm GMT

Charge for old maps, charge for more old maps, and now charge for a mode that should have been included in the game from the get go...nice.

  • RedHawk4

    Posted Feb 21, 2012 1:14 pm GMT

Co-op Survival should have already been included as a game mode from the beginning, not simply thrown into the random mix that is the regular co-op mode of UC3. Making people pay for it now is bogus, unless it really makes some other improvements that we don't know of yet.

I wasn't impressed with UC3 mp, some of the maps were recycled from UC2 which was a let down. It just didn't seem as fun overall as UC2 either.
