Street Fighter X Tekken sales blamed on 'cannibalism'

Brendan Sinclair
By Brendan Sinclair, Senior Editor

Capcom says crossover fighter fell short of expectations because of a glut of brawlers launched in too short a time frame.

Street Fighter X Tekken didn't perform up to Capcom's expectations, and the publisher thinks a glut of recent fighting game releases is to blame. In a postearnings Q&A session posted to the publisher's investor relations site today, Capcom addressed the game's worldwide sales of 1.4 million.

"Sales of Street Fighter X Tekken have fallen short of our plan," the company's statement confirmed. "We believe one of [the] causes is cannibalism because of the large number of other games in this genre that were launched within a short time."

Since the beginning of 2011, Capcom has released a range of fighters, including Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition, Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition, and Street Fighter III: Third Strike Online Edition. The same time frame has also seen a number of fighting games launched by other publishers, including Mortal Kombat, SoulCalibur V, BlazBlue: Continuum Shift Extend, and King of Fighters XIII.

The publisher also addressed Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City shipping 2 million units as a vindication of its business plan. "This shows the success of our decision to try the new approach of using an alliance with an overseas development company," the company said.

Actually the reason why they didn't sell as well was because not everyone buys games as soon as they came out and all the on disc dlc controversy was a big reason I for one didn't decide to get it. The reason I'm considering it again is because its going to be October before another game I want comes out and that's re6. But hearing about a major uproar about a game can and will stem desires to buy your product. Capcom will do well to remember this.

sevendiamantes 11 pts

After all the bread chewing people are going to continue buying their games. No DLC early. They are going to re evaluate how to sell us pieces of content without making costumers angry. That is? all. The DLC will still be exclusive for the Vita release. It doesn't matter if people want the 12 characters. We are not going to get them early. Support Capcom at your own discretion.

I am done supporting them, the last game i bought from them was Megaman Powered Up at a discounted price of $10.99 from an online store.

sevendiamantes 11 pts

JessMarz They are really making costumers angry this days. I hate waiting a long time for content that is already  on the disc. I guess next time they will try to make the costumers less angry. Don't get me started with Mega Man. He looks like somebody I know. Is mess up.

That is what's pissing them off the most.

I personally am waiting for Tekken x Street Fighter for several reasons.

1) Tekken x Street Fighter will stay Tekken x Street Fighter. It won't become Mega Uber Ultimate Tekken x Street Fighter Super 3D Ultra-Cool Edition after 5 previous releases.

2) They've already said it won't have character DLC. (I forget whether or not they said there would be on-disc DLC.)

3) I personally prefer the Tekken engine and game just because I grew up with it, Street Fighter is unfamiliar to me.

4) I no longer want to try Street Fighter because I can never quite be sure anymore which game I'm buying will be the full game, or if I should wait for Capcom to roll out a few more Ultimate editions before I invest.

 InnerSenses

Harada said they won't hold back any characters.   Knowing Tekken's track record so far, they don't.  Hope it stays that way.

dragonsama 9 pts

No Capcom the sales figures are because of your "On-Disc DLC" garbage.   If anything Capcom should release a patch that makes those character unlock for free and all future versions of the game sold should have them unlocked.

Badguy_NYC 5 pts

To be Fair GOW3 had on disc dlc and yet theydidn't recieve as much heat as capcom is getting. Anywaysi passed on this game since Lee Chaolan and Bruce Irvin were left out. i figured i wait until Super Ultimate Sf x Tekken Arcade edition comes out where i can get everybody all at once. guess thats not gonna happen. Much like mvc3 and umvc3 i yawn at capcoms 3d fighting games these days. I dont even want Capcom vs snk 3 anymore if its going to be 3d.

JessMarz 9 pts

Badguy_NYCBecause they were ADD ONS, the DLC for Capcom is already on the DISC, you are paying for an overpriced key so you can unlock one specific Item on the Disc.

sevendiamantes 11 pts

You want to carry your message across. Cut off their supply of money down to 0%. The millions of dollars on their pockets is no letting them listing to their fans. Make them pay!

brain20035 14 pts

Say whatever you want about your expectations not being met capcom! You lost us when you decided to rip us off in our faces by deliberately locking characters on disk!! and for the record Residents Evil ORC is nothing but a piece of JUNK!! you ripped us over in that respect to, getting us to buy a game in a popular franchise which was nothing but pure crap!! and then you say it was successful?? because you made a lot of money from it??? how stupid can you get????

dxdevilex0 15 pts

Or maybe on-disc DLC just turns people off?

wyan_ 19 pts

I don't care if this sounds like every other reply, but it has to be hammered into the thick greedy heads of the Capcom execs. Capcom... the reason SFXT didn't sell well is because of the on-disc DLC crap!!!!

Henninger 36 pts

OK this is funny as hell. Yea capcom it had absolutely nothing to do with the "DLC" u guys put on the disc & sold it for 60 bucks & then try to sell said "DLC" @ a later date for another 20 bucks. Lets just blame it on all the other fighting games that have come out. Because every1 in the world who plays fighting games plays every single game mentioned in the article. Some ppl dont like certain fighting games. I know of ppl who hate Street Fighter (yes i know how do u hate SF), love Tekken & wont even touch SF. I know ppl who hate BlazBlue & love SF. I myself dont like the new Marvel v. Capcom games that have come out & dont play those @ all. So please dont blame it on the "over saturation" of the fighting genre. Its because u pissed every loyal fan out there & insulted the intelligence of the other not as loyal fans that actually had an interest in playing ur game. WE BOYCOTTED UR GAME U DUMBA**'. Now if u stop with ur BS business practices & maybe just maybe some of the fans will come back. But thats a VERY steep hill to climb.

I'd respect  Capcom just a lil more if they admitted they purposely screw over paying customers and Fired all those Greddy Bastards in charge for newer honest developrs and publishers.

Here is my list of demands:

1.) Since I bought the Limited Edition Marvel vs. Capcom 3, they will have to give me Ultimate Marvel Vs Capcom for free.

2.) Make Marvel Vs. Capcom 3: "We Apologize to All the Fans" Edition,

That includes some of the fanfavorite characters from the previous MvsC games, including Megaman, the REAL ONE.

3.)Start working on the release of Megaman Legends 3 and the demo.

4.)Start working on the US release of Phoenix Wright X Professor Layton.

5.) Rehire Keiji Inafune and give in to his demands.

6.) Stay off from Resident Evil and Streetfighter for at least 2 years.

7.) Work with Disney to rerelease the classic NES games like Darkwing Duck, Duck Tales, and other games you did for them on the Nintendo Shop Channel.

Capcom. Start Working.

gam3r2011 16 pts

good this will teach CRAPCOM not to f*ck with customers

tsunami2311 9 pts

Capcom is seriously blind as to why there games have bad sale numbers these days. or just ignoreing there own mistakes. Capcom has fallen from grace and they can even except that..

Asura wrath was only game i bought that had "capcom" attached to it and they still milking that game too. 60$ is already to much for game that are short, and it even more of slap in the face when you find out the bulk of the "DLC" isnt even DLC as it on the disc you just payed 60$ for

JessMarz 9 pts

 tsunami2311

The last game I bought that was released recently/during release from Capcom was Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 :Limited Edition. Yeah I was pissed when they released the Ultimate Edition.

JessMarz 9 pts

You think that is the only reason why SFXT didn't do so well? Couldn't the reason be the mistreatment of a certain "Blue Bomber", you know the one, right? You denied him being in the game not once, but twice. You also denied him of two new games, technically three since one was a beta demo that you were going to charge anyway. Oh and to top it off you got some fat bas**** to pretend it's him in this game. Maybe its the way you steal our money by locking DLC that is on the Disc itself already and selling it to us? Or maybe it's the way you ignore your other franchises and continue to milk the Streetfighter and Resident Evil series? How can I put this even simpler: YOUR FANS ARE PIST.

deathblow3 15 pts

lets call it how it is capcom this game failed because of on disc dlc. you have hurt your customer base and you will need to change a lot of things before your games start doing respectable numbers again. if you dont see that say hello to sega at the bottom of the barrel for me

nintendoboy16 29 pts

Capcom, you guys have no one but yourselves to blame for all the on-disc DLC Bulls*** you pulled with the game. As much as I was interested in the game, you guys finally get what you deserve.

I hope you SERIOUSLY reconsider your DLC BS!

oskuuu 43 pts

so bad sales had nothing to do with cutting off ½ of the characters with "disc locked content" and buyers boycotting the game because of it?

Uesugi-dono 49 pts

In my opinion, here's the problem with SF X Tekken:

1. Take a good idea

2. Make it look completely compatable with the established SFIV formula

3. Make it fight completely different

4. Add in  some much-loathed DLC-on disc content.

5. Fail.

SadPSPAddict 36 pts

Putting DLC on the disk is a con because it means it was ready at the time the discs were created. Day one dlc is different since it something the developers worked on after the discs went to print!!

Despite this there are a glut of fighting games on the market so that analysis may well be correct

deathblow3 15 pts

what games would this guy be refering to? no new fighting games have come out with this release way before yes, way after yes but this game had plenty of time to make it i would have bought it till i heard of the dlc now i will never buy it.

LanceCypher 15 pts

You guys do all understand that just because the additional content won't be on-disc doesn't mean that it will command lower prices, become available any earlier, or whatever it is you're hoping for. Frankly, if any developers were listening to our comments, they would just publish a game with all currently available content, then move on. I think DLC is arguably the worst thing to happen to gaming since the video game crash of '83. Rather than hanging on a single game for however long they can, milking money out of the same piece of software, devs should forget about DLC and move on to making better, more advanced new games. Thanks to DLC, among other things, the video game industry is starting to stagnate.

pound-u 21 pts

Crapcom, I'm sure many people didn't buy Street Fighter vs. Tekken because they didn't want to put up with your garbage DLC practices. I'm one of them.

slonekb05 34 pts

of course you fell short, once you dropped street fighter 4 we were happy. but then you messed up just liked you did with super nintendo and started making 10 versions on the same game. Your over saturating the game completely

leeko_link 53 pts

So Capcom not to many ppl buying your so call Street Fighter X Tekken. Well let's see they are either.

1 - Didn't buy it cuz you keep ripping them off with disc-locked contents.

2 - Rather wait for Ultimate Street Fighter X Tekken.

3 - Not taking your craps anymore and rather play much better quality fighters like The King of Fighters XIII, Mortal Kombat 9, Dead or Alive Dimension, and BlazBlue: Continuum Shift II.

rey2 7 pts

They're blaming the release of other fighting games for the mediocre sales of theirs.

I think it's crystal clear they are aware of the real issue.  I bought one of the said games and was more happy with it than with this one.  The dlc on that game i bought is real dlc than capcom's SFxT.

Good one capcom.  Any other excuses?

sevendiamantes 11 pts

Why people waste their time speaking with Capcom? Just let the company fall and burn into little pieces. Is all over. Do not trouble yourself with this company any more.

TruthTellers 142 pts

OMG, Capcom you don't have the fortitude to state the truth that SFxT sales were bad because of the disc locked content and all the other sh*t you've been pulling? I can't believe that Capcom said this. They've lost all legitimacy and credibility. Capcom's image will never recover from the actions they've taken this past year.

NejiKusa 5 pts

I'm a huge fighting game fan, and I am always discussing games within the fighting game community. The problem was is that a large chunk of the games roster was locked away on the disc, it had a ton of unwanted game play systems, and was all around disappointing before the game even came out.

chikahiro94 54 pts

While I can see a little of this (there has been talk of the genre imploding again), I would have to say the upgrade policy Capcom has kept to (SFIV can't upgrade to SSFIV, MvC3 can't upgrade to UMvC3), the complaints about the engine, and the on-disc DLC debacle have all added up to rejection of the game from the core fighting game market. While many gamers might've been okay with one of those issues, having all three as factors is a bit much to overlook.

FallenOneX 29 pts

Umm, I didn't buy it because I'm waiting for the DLC characters to come out in a few months. That way, when I find the game used then get the DLC, it'll be like I purchased the game brand new in the first place. Rented it for a week, fun game.

Gelugon_baat 441 pts

"Cannibalism"?

It's like Capcom is thinking that it owns a huge share of the market for fighting games, and then suggest that this share is dead.

Terrible choice of words.

a0me 5 pts

Gelugon_baat  They probably meant to say that sales of Street Fighter X Tekken have been cannibalized by other fighting game releases.

Gelugon_baat 441 pts

a0me They are just bashing the competition.

hadlee73 39 pts

I'd love to see Capcom shake things up a bit with their fighting games. While fans of fighting games tend to think story modes (like the one in Mortal Kombat) are stupid or pointless, that kind of mode would help bring in those gamers that sit on the fence about the genre. For example, imagine a Marvel fighting game that had a story mode similar to Mortal Kombat, with the actual story written by Stan Lee (or one of the other Marvel writers). That would bring in the comic fans as well as the fighters.

sevendiamantes 11 pts

So sad. Now they are doing stand up comedy instead of selling their finish DLC. Have some compassion people. Buy half of their game. Later go buy the other half. Don't be heartless. Don't let Capcom down on their expectations.

jcp234 6 pts

After they rushed Marvel vs. Capcom 3, I made sure not to purchase this. Marvel vs. Capcom 2 was my favorite fighting game...I had high hopes for Marvel vs. Capcom 3...and it obviously was just a quick money grab for Capcom. No way in hell I was going to purchase this garbage.

juiceair 23 pts

Ummmm, no!  It's because you plan every franchise with at least 2 to 3 re-releases instead of giving the consumer the final product the first time.  Gamers are smarter now and will wait for the best version instead of being fooled over and over again.  CAPCOM really done themselves in with on-disc DLC.

elbert_b_23 9 pts

silly capcom has to realize that  to many fighters in  a year time will hurt it, but i don't support capcom so no matter what they wont get my money intel they revive megaman

polterdice 19 pts

"We believe..."

You believe?! Find out for sure! Don't tell me that you laid off your whole research department.

Chemical_Viking 7 pts

I personally didn't buy this game because Capcom have burned me one too many times. Yes I bought the first MvC3. Only for Capcom to rerelease it a little later for half the price and more fighters. They've been doing it for years. They released Street Fighter 2 about 60 times with minor tweaks so I've only myself to blame for that one. The last time they rereleased SF2 they called it "Street Fighter IV"

Oh and on disc "DLC" annoys me as well, a lot. I was holding off waiting to buy it, but now, I can't be bothered. There are much much better fighters out there, and they are gouging us. So they can cling on to whatever B.S. reasons they want to, blaming the market or the gamers, but it's their own damn fault and if they don't listen, it will be their problem in the end.

NitehawkFury 7 pts

While it's definitely been stated to death here, I just wanted to chime in as well. It's good to see that the fruits of taking your fanbase for granted so often is finally getting to Capcom.

It's amazing how blind people can be when they want to look at the sun and tell you that it's not there.

TheTHCGamer 5 pts

No CAPCOM people arent wanting to buy the game because with 12 DLC on disc youve basically told your consumers that there purchasing an outdate version of a game.  Who want to buy or continue playing a game that we know for a fact not speculaiton thats going to recieve an update.

It makes me laugh that CAPCOM is in denial about its business decision being the cause of there lack of sales for this game.  Second of all lets be real game really isnt that good.  A good majority of matches are A,B,C, launcher and then tag in opponent.  Jump attacks for to well.

This game has a lot of potential its just CAPCOM made some really bad decisions.
