Borderlands 2: Playing the Siren

Justin Calvert
By Justin Calvert, Executive Editor

Forget everything you think you know about sirens in Borderlands; Maya has little in common with her predecessor.

Along with Dan Chiappini from GameSpot's Australian team, I recently had an opportunity to play through a lengthy demo of Borderlands 2--the same demo that PAX East attendees will be able to get their hands on later this week. Dan and I played through the demo's two zones cooperatively using the only two characters that were available; Dan played as Salvador the gunzerker, while I played as Maya the siren.

Before jumping into the first of the two zones, titled The Wildlife Preserve, we were told that our characters were already at level 20 but that none of their skill points had been spent yet. Job one, then, was to check out the skill trees and settle on one of three specializations. Surprisingly, none of the skill trees in Borderlands 2 (or at least not in the pre-alpha version of the game that we were playing) appear to have anything to do with specific weapons. (Regardless of which character you play as, you're proficient with all of the weapons in Borderlands 2's extensive arsenal.) Rather, skill trees can be used to augment your chosen character's special ability.

Like Lilith, the siren from Borderlands, Maya has a special ability that's the same regardless of where you spend your skill points. Lilith's ability was a phasewalk that simultaneously made her invisible to enemies, immune to damage, and significantly quicker on her feet for a short time. Maya's ability is very different; her phaselock lets you temporarily encase an enemy--even a really big "super badass" one--inside a bubble that hovers a few feet above the ground. Enemies are unable to do anything while phaselocked, but are still vulnerable to attacks. Furthermore, depending on where you spend your skill points, the phaselock ability can have a number of other beneficial effects. The first time I specced out my siren, for example, I put points into the harmony skill tree's "sweet release" skill so that enemies killed while phaselocked would drop healing orbs that homed in on players.

By pouring a lot of skill points into the harmony tree I was able to make my siren a pretty effective healer. "Restoration" gave me the ability to heal other players simply by shooting them, "elated" caused all players' health to regenerate anytime an enemy was phaselocked, and "res" let me resurrect downed teammates by using my phaselock ability on them. Other, less-healer-oriented options on the harmony tree included "mind's eye," which increased my crit and melee damage; "recompense," which gave my shield a chance to regenerate anytime I took damage; and "wreck," which increased my rate of fire with all gun types when I phaselocked an enemy. Abilities like these will surely make the harmony siren a great character to have on your team, but since only two of us were playing on this occasion, there were definitely times when I felt that points spent to deal extra damage might have been more beneficial.

Heading into the second zone, Caustic Caverns, I opted to put all of my skill points into the cataclysm skill tree, which, in massively multiplayer online terms, would be considered the DPS spec. The abilities I chose to put most of my points into included "flicker," for an increased chance to cause status effects; "immolate," which added fire damage to any shots that I fired when down and trying for a second wind; and "cloud kill," which caused my shots to leave behind acid clouds that were harmful to enemies for around five seconds. Other noteworthy abilities on the tree included "foresight," which increases both magazine size and reload speed; "helios," which caused a fiery explosion anytime I killed a phaselocked enemy; and "ricochet," which gave my shots a chance to bounce around multiple enemies for a short time anytime I got a kill. In short, I became far more effective in combat.

I didn't have a chance to mess with the third skill tree, labeled "motion," but it appeared to focus on survivability, and since some of the skills improve Maya's movement, I suspect it will be the tree that most closely resembles playing as Lilith. Something similar to Lilith's phasewalk ability would definitely be welcome, since among the impressive array of new enemy types on show in the demo were a number of wormhole threshers covered in spikes that, after emerging from the ground, have an almost irresistible ability to pull you toward them. Other memorable enemies from the demo are too numerous to detail here, but you can see some of them in action, plus hear Dan and me discuss them in our Borderlands 2 video preview.

Borderlands 2 is currently scheduled for release in September. We look forward to bringing you lots more coverage of the game in the coming weeks and months.

Me and my partner completed Borerlands 1 + DLCAnd I personally can't wait to Co-op borderlands 2, Although phaselocking? I'm not too sure I am fond of this at the moment, but it might be better than it sounds,

@SythisTaru No, I never did beat the game. I got bored with the repetitive gameplay, the grinding quests that were by and large much the same. Perhaps after 100+ hours into it the quest become more varied. Yeah, I am a slow gamer too. A buddy of mine is able to play through games very, very quickly. So, he always hounds me to finish up a game so we can discuss it in full.

ILuvGameSpot123 5 pts

Just make a non-modded weapon creator in the game, which requires materials you find through the game; modded players have their 1337 gunz, and others still don't have to complain ! :D

crusader8463 6 pts

Here's hoping they make the PC version playable this time around. Still really fumed I spent $60 on a game designed to be played online co-op that had an online co-op that didn't work.

@SythisTaru I don't think he meant in 20 hours done 1 playthrough... Shame though they just tested Maya....

dicegamer 5 pts

what ya waiting for let get it going the game is already looking good

SythisTaru 5 pts

@Lord_Uhtred How did you have 20 hours!? I played through it coop (which caused me to beat the game even faster than I would have normally. I go slow.) and it took 72 hours. That's just for 1 playthrough and no DLC :X

Cryptic_Shadow 12 pts

keep the info coming. We got 6 months until release. :)

i'd just love for there to be a close combat specialist guns are great and all but its just not always my thing brick was good but his melee fun time was just too short and was restricted to his fists

AkhilAnilkumar 6 pts

I just hope that there is a great variety to the environments this time.

hope to see the same co-op fun as before : )

The first game was probably my favorite videogame of all time, and I'm really anticipating the sequel. That being said, I don't know...tying all of your buff and heal abilities to a gimmicky move like phaselock seems a little lame. Hopefully it'll be better than it sounds in action.

@leikeylosh soo you agree with everything I just said.....

@Cronicx- Cronicx- says: "you think the mass effect 3 ending was bad? Are you serious? Remember Assassin's Creed? Rage? Half-Life 2: Episode 2? Halo 2? Bioshock?" Ohh, yes, Bioshock ending was terrible, wasn't it? WOULD YOU KINDLY shut your mouth?

xeromagnum 5 pts

@Grimlim Agreed. Skyrim mods great! Played alone isn't ruining anothers experience. But there are people who like mods so there needs to be two online types like other games ranked/unranked.

Grimlim 6 pts

@jestersmiles mods are great but not the type that were in borderlands. If you have modded weapons you shouldnt be able to play online with people who want to play legit. It is not fun for others when modders 1 shot everything. I also hope the glitch of getting other peoples quests isnt on there. It was annoying going online and then when i decided to play offline i had every freaking quest.

Lord_Uhtred 5 pts

I'm looking forward to more news about this game. I enjoyed Borderlands, but I did get burned out after 20 hours of gameplay. Doing every little thing, to get the full experience. Still I did have fun and loved the art direction, it seems that the art direction has changed just ever so slightly in a good direction. I tried to play as Lilith, she was easily the coolest character in Borderlands, but not powerful enough for my play style.

Stasis 2.0? Okay i'll use that, thank you. Now bring motherf*kin phantoms.

Never been a big fan of games that feature weapon skills. Because while it may not indefinitely lock you into a certain weapon, it will nudge you in that direction. I prefer it when I'm free to wield any weapon I want. That's why I really enjoy Monster Hunter, your not locked into any weapon type. And you can make almost any armor set, support any weapon.

Cronicx- 5 pts

@leikeylosh you think the mass effect 3 ending was bad? Are you serious? Do you play any other games? Remember Assassin's Creed? Rage? Half-Life 2: Episode 2? Halo 2? Bioshock? Fable? BORDERLANDS? Shall I continue.....? How bout you hop off the ME3 bandwagon and quit whining because compared to those endings, ME3's ending was great

Jestersmiles 18 pts

There nothing wrong with modding it brings new life to games that one already beaten. No one forcing you to play with modders, don't like just play with your friends and STFU. Damn carebears.

I'm liking the way this sounds. First game, each class specialized in certain weapons, although every class can use any weapon. For instance, Mordecai focused on Sniper Rifles and Revolvers. Sure, Brick can use Sniper Rifles with great efficientcy. Hell, you could even make a Brick build and use Snipers as his sole weapon. He wouldn't be as good as Mordecai, and vice versa with Brick's main weapon. I liked the way that worked. They had a tree for weapons, skill, and misc. You were never locked out of one weapon because of your class, but you were more effective with their chosen weapon. Now, I'm liking the way this looks, with the trees focusing on special abilities rather than guns. This should change things up a bit.

Loved the first one. This one looks great. New enemies, weapons, environments, characters, etc. Only thing im worried about is the skill tree. Looks like the first game (especially since it is 1 active and the rest passive skills). Hopefully the passive skills offer enough variety to stay interesting. I would prefer less "more health/more energy" and more "bulllets leave behind trail of poison." More interesting concepts than generic

I'm so excited for this game. But dreading when it comes out which means it'll be September and I have a new year of teaching to begin. Yet, everything new thing I see about this has me more and more anticpating this game. Looks like they're doing everything right

parrot_of_adun 21 pts

@leikeylosh Well Borderlands' ending was worse, really. The difference is that ME3 was practically an interactive movie by contrast; no one was playing Borderlands for the story.

RobertBowen 55 pts

Really liking everything I've seen about this game so far. I'm glad there is a new lineup of characters with different skills to try out as well. Definitely looking forward to co-op on this one. :D

@kenny1292 I didn't start anything. He responded in a hostile manner, and I got angry and responded back. Also, this is the internet... do you really think not cursing makes a damn bit of difference? Maturity isn't exactly common here, and I was acting pretty rationaly. You can "pretend" to be the bigger man here by saying "No swearing=More people will listen to you. shame on you", but that comes across more like an insult and an exaggeration since I only actually swore once, and not towards Darthlod, saying "F***". I called him "a garbage player", so again I insulted him ONCE in context. "try not using insults to prove your point and maybe someone will listen to you". Again, I ask, did you READ my comment? It was pretty tame, just frustrated. Also, I have received responses. One you can actually see here, and about 2 private ones. I'm not gloating, I'm not insulting you, but I am calling you out. Heck, even Darthlor misinterpreted your own response as a peacemaker, and advice giver and started ANOTHER rant on myself and legit gamers. Where's HIS talking to? Congrats, Darthlor, you're a hacker. I have better things to do with my life. I don't care if you want to cheat, and mod, and abuse the games coding, as long as you stay away from my friends and I's game sessions. I can't even trust the community for the next game because of my experience in the last one. I also DID play the game 3 years ago, and it was EVEN WORSE back then.

One of my biggest mistakes was finishing a long and thorough chapter of my gaming life with Fallout 3, only to switch to Borderlands... still can't finish the first.

R3FURBISHED says: "The first Borderlands was awesome, but had the worst "ending" of any game ever." Did you erase Mass Effect 3 from your memory?

DarthLod 44 pts

@kenny1292 : He "can't" play with anyone online that "isn't modding" because the game is 3 yrs old, not many are playing it, period. Had he been playing it 3 years ago he wouldn't have the "problem". He can also go to TrueAchievements and find boosting sessions with non-modders. Besides, as I mentioned, you can choose who you play with or not. It's not a Versus Multiplayer game where "modding" would actually ruin the game. So, don't try to tell others how to play their game. I don't find using an infinite shield boring at all. I don't find using over-powered guns boring. I find it all very fun and enjoyable. I will continue doing so on Borderlands, and Dead Island. If Borderlands 2 gets hacked, I'll do it on that as well. It's my game, I'll do as I please. Seriously, I have no pity for this guy. He can simply choose who he plays with. Problem solved.

kenny1292 15 pts

@DarthLod While dxBIGBOSSxb is being insulting and arrogant, he has a point. Perhaps if i phrase it in a way that doesn't sound like I'm spitting fire you can sympathize. Modding/hacking does matter in a co-op game and so does challenge. I know i usually prefer little challenge because i find it more relaxing but when I played Borderlands with my modding friend and tried modded weapons myself it was dreadfully boring. His point is that he can't play with anyone online that's not is friends that haven't modded because all the players left are modders. So solutions for BL2: remove modding? I'd prefer an alternative since many people find modding a lot of fun and they should be able to do so. Perhaps instead integrate modding into the game and make it possible to search for non modded players only or something... idk if that's possible, I'm no game programmer, but that's my opinion. @dxBIGBOSSxb, try not using insults to prove your point and maybe someone will listen to you. As for the classes, looks awesome, can't wait! Loved Lilith in BL1

DarthLod 44 pts

@dxBIGBOSSxb : My game never lags. I only played with my friends as well, but most of the time alone. I am not a "garbage player". I paid for the game, I'll play it as I see fit. News Flash!! You don't dictate to the world how everyone else plays their games. It's not a standard Multiplayer game, only co-op, so it frankly doesn't matter if people "hack". Just don't play with hackers then. You choose who you play with. Problem solved. Simple. Logic. If it was a game like COD or GOW with Versus and such, that is entirely different. But, it's not. I should also mention I played the game up until I was lvl 58 (in Playthrough 2) before I ever used a "modded" weapon. So, get off your high horse already. You don't own gaming. And, this "challenge" that people are obsessed with now days....not everyone wants a gargantuan challenge out of their games. Some people just want to play, enjoy, and relax. You play your game the way you want, challenge all you want, but keep your dictations and demands out of mine. Thanx.

R3FURBISHED 10 pts

@dxBIGBOSSxb Borderlands had an interesting narrative, lets say that. I enjoyed figuring out what happened to the people that had been on Pandora. Though it was very loose and outside of collecting guns and killing very large creatures there wasn't much there. If Borderlands 2 has an actual story, ending and is more difficult I will be very happy.
