Chipper Jones: Jamie Moyer ‘paranoid,’ accused me of stealing signs (VIDEO)

In an argument between players with a combined age of 89 years, Jamie Moyer of the Rockies and Chipper Jones of the Braves snapped at each other Saturday night in Colorado. Jones, 40, later told reporters that Moyer, 49, accused him of stealing signs in the fifth inning as he led off second base before relaying them to Brian McCann in the batter's box. He also called Moyer "paranoid."

Jones added that the spat was a motivating factor for the Braves in their 13-9 comeback victory at Coors Field. Reporters could not get a comment about the incident from Moyer, but Chipper — who collected a hit in each of his next two at-bats and drove in five runs on the night — had some doozies via MLB.com.

"That was all on Jamie Moyer," Jones said. "He woke a sleeping giant tonight. He started chirping and it went all downhill from there. He accused me of relaying a sign down 6-2 with a 3-0 count to Brian McCann. I have never relayed a sign to anyone while I'm on second base."

Update: As reported by Mark Bowman of MLB.com on Twitter on Sunday, Chipper was still steaming at Moyer after the game:

Chipper said he told a couple Rockies he would discuss things w/ Moyer if he wanted to meet him in the hallway last night. — Mark Bowman (@mlbbowman) May 6, 2012

    And there was more:

Not that the Braves would need to steal any signs on Moyer, Jones said via a tweet from Dave O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution:

More #Braves Chipper on Moyer "I mean, dude, we don't need signs, especially for him. I mean, my goodness, every pitch is 78. Come on."

So, when does "Saturday Night Live" ask Chipper to host? In his earlier diatribe, Jones implied some shady things about Moyer:

"You question our integrity, that's wrong," Jones said. "I've never accused him of doctoring a baseball. I've never accused him of over-milligraming, nothing. That's [garbage] and he woke us up. I didn't see any signs on the 900-foot homers that were hit."

That old guy says I'm stealing signs!"Doctoring a baseball" means throwing a scuffed or spitball. But "over-milligraming"? Does he mean Moyer has taken steroids? Viagra? Geritol? (Do old people still take Geritol?) Further — did Chipper just invent a term? Also, did he say to Moyer, "No, old man, I won't get off your lawn!"?

And in saying it's wrong to question another team's/person's integrity, is Jones implying that baseball players should just let each other cheat without calling the other guy on it in public? The first rule of Fight Club is, "Don't talk about Fight Club"? Not so, if he's accusing the Phillies. These unwritten rules are so layered.

Moyer finished with five earned runs and 10 hits allowed in five innings. He has a 4.01 ERA so far but a WHIP of 1.66 in six starts. If a reporter asks Moyer for his side of the spat Monday, hopefully he remembers. (That's an old-person joke.)

Regardless, as @FauxFrankWren reminds us all, this is what happens when you talk trash at Larry Wayne Jones.

Sign Stealing? Big deal! It's always a part of the game. This is as stupid as a Chris Chase football article.

there's no way this is as stupid as a Chris Chase article.

Base runners stealing signs are is as old as the game! It's always happened and has always been part of the game. that;s why there is a different set of pitch indicators when a runner is at 2nd base. Moyer if whining about something that has always existed. And it doesn't atop there, 1st & 3d base cooaches are watched and their signs are attmepted to be read. Can't believe that Moyer is going on about this.

Tim, you're an idiot. Chipper Jones is the 2nd best switchhitter of all-time! Already has 4 homeruns in less than 20 games. His body breaks because he NEVER used steroids. Also, there is NO better hitter with the GAME on the line! Ist Ballot HF'er. Stick to the story. Oh yeah, according to you, we shoulda traded him for Pujois, who finally homered.

If players don't "STEAL" signs, why do pitchers and catchers change signs when they get a runner on second? Why do batters sometimes sneak a peak at the catcher to look for pitch location?. Why do teams create elaborate signs in the first place? Like poker, players look for "TELLS" all the time! It IS part of the game.....NOT CHEATING! When players change teams, they are not supposed to tell old team secrets and it is custom not to ask. If during a game you can pick up a sign, so be it.

Players are free to steal signs, and pitchers are free to have the catcher call a curveball and throw a fastball at a guys earhole. That is how you stop guys from stealing signs. Unfortunately for Moyer, hitting a guy in the head doesn't really do much when you throw as slow as he does. That is probably why he ran his mouth.

Shouldn't Chipper Jones be on the DL already?? It's May and the 15 day DL is getting worried wondering where you are

If every pitcher threw at every player that ever tried to steal a sign, the result would be chaos. Shame on players and coaches who DON'T try to steal signs.
    • R  •  11 hours ago
Stealing signs is not cheating. The managers and coaches need to be more creative if they don't want the other team to figure out their signs.
      • Rob 11 hours ago
Exactly. If you don't think first and third basemen don't look to the third base coach for the signs they are giving to the batter and runners, then you really don't understand the game.

Coaches give signs, people try to interrupt them and react. It's part of the game.
      • pita 11 hours ago
Electronically is cheating but a person second can steal all the signs he or she wants. In fact there are books on how to steal signs from second, pick one up.

Seriously. Since when has stealing signs been illegal?
    • do tell  •  7 hours ago
OMG!!! You mean he was on base and saw a sign and let the batter know what was coming? You can't mean it! He's going to hell for sure!

Did he steal the slow or slower sign.

I never thought it was illegal or immoral to steal signs from 2nd base.

why did Jones get so defensive?

Gotta love Moyer for still pitching in the show. Reminds me of back in high school when i was having a surprisingly strong outing , our coach asked my catcher what i was throwing out there, he answered, "the ball", thats about all it was and thats all it looks like Moyer still is throwing.

just how many 'unwritten' rules are there? Seems like a new one pops up every week. Somebody needs to make a list.. um .. write them down.. so we can keep track.I thought these were PROFESSIONAL players, yet someone gets their panties in a wad over trivial stuff every week, over some unwritten rule.

how stupid is this - hey batter moyer is going to throw a breaking pitch- his fastball wont break a pane of glass- hasn't been able to for 10 years- does anyone in baseball not know this

Jamie Moyer needs to wipe the sand out of his vagina. There is no crying in baseball!!
    • dbrown  •  1 hour 16 minutes ago
The unwritten rule is that you dont get caught. If you can figure them out you use it.

over milligramming. It means moving past an acceptable tollerance. simply put. getting himself closer to the mound to deliver a pitch maybe, donno. Engineering himself an edge maybe, its not a drug statement. its mechanics.
    • Kev  •  Minneapolis, Minnesota  •  9 hours ago
So now we argue about "unwritten rules"? What's next? Do we start arguing about rules not even thought of yet? Stealing signs is a silly subject to argue about. If they don't want people to see and relay the signs, start using radio with ear wigs and private frequencies. Only the pitcher, catcher and coach of the defensive team can wear them. Otherwise ...... forget about it!
