Dare Blogs - Yummy Tummy

Dare to be Digital 2011 team Yummy Tummy talks exclusively to Develop about working on their entry title Lucky Ghost.

Well in short the last few weeks have been… busy. Working most hours of the day has taken it out of us but we are very proud to say that our game is slowly but surely coming together. In a nutshell our game is a Super Smash Bros/Bomberman-esque survival game. Using your iPhone or other iOS device as the controller connected to a PC you have command of one of our mini-ghost characters (the turtle being the most popular so far). Your character is on a tilting arena that is constantly changing, with blocks falling out and folding in on itself, making it into an ever-changing labyrinth. While avoiding all the pot holes you must also take heed of giant PUSHYPUSHY, our huge metal ball of destruction who rolls around with the arena’s tilt knocking off all in his way.

Our game is entirely about communal gaming, we want to field as many players as possible at once and have so far successfully tested five. Getting hold of iOS devices has been challenging however… In our game whoever wins each round becomes the master of the arena and controls the blocks, folding and the tilting.  Each match in our game lasts five rounds – to win you must be the player who controls the arena the most. Each round lasts about a minute and 30 seconds depending on how mean the arena master wishes to be, so it is a fast and furiously paced game. You also have the ability to push your fellow competitors off the arena if you wish to mischievous.

The Dare experience, if you are serious about getting into this industry, is something that you should aim to have from the word go. A professional and stressful setting, it's as close to the real thing as you are going to get. It is not a walk in the park and you have really got to want to be here, but it is without a doubt one of the most rewarding and fulfilling opportunities we as a team and individually have ever had. Meeting all the mentors from companies who we idealise every day has been intimidating to say the least, but it has made such a difference it is very difficult to put into words. A guy who has been working in games for 30 years is going to notice little things in your product that you were just completely clueless about, and with a sentence can completely alter your entire outlook on your game. But to be able to have a taste of the knowledge that we have gleaned from the people that Dare has organised to visit us for real one to one guidance has been incredibly humbling.

With only a few days left to ProtoPlay, we are very quickly running out of time to rid our prototype of its numerous bugs but we are very optimistic, our team is a determined one to say the least, and we are seriously looking forward to watching people play our game. From the guys here at Yummy Tummy we hope to see you all at the ProtoPlay weekend !  We'll be the guys in the corner who look like they haven't slept for nine weeks but will have the biggest smiles on their faces :)
