Facebook, security firms to provide free antivirus

(AP) Facebook is strengthening its security controls in an attempt to protect its 900 million users from spam and malicious content.

Facebook said Wednesday that it will work with Microsoft Corp. and with computer security firms Trend Micro Inc., Sophos, Symantec Corp. and Intel Corp.'s McAfee to provide safeguards on Facebook.

(CNET) During Apple's second quarter earnings call Tuesday, Apple CEO Tim Cook dismissed the idea of Apple releasing a MacBook-iPad hybrid device, saying such convergence was a "compromise" to the end user.

"You can converge a toaster and a refrigerator," Cook said, "but those things are probably not going be pleasing to the user."

(CBS News) Chinese micro-blogging service Sina Weibo has deleted several accounts for allegedly spreading "malicious political rumors."

Sina Weibo is a Twitter-like service lets its users broadcast text and photos in real-time. The service has over 300 million users. Twitter has been blocked from China since 2009.

Apple trumps expectations, sells 35M iPhones in 2Q

(AP) Apple Inc., the world's most valuable company, trumped skeptics once again by reporting blowout iPhone sales.

Apple says it sold 35 million iPhones in the January-to-March quarter, almost twice as many as it sold a year ago and above analyst expectations.

Google Drive online storage launches today

(CBS News) Google announced its cloud storage service Google Drive Tuesday. The new service is an online file storage system that is also integrated with services, like Gmail, Google+ and Google Documents.

So how does it work?

Google Drive is similar to Dropbox or Microsoft SkyDrive. The service requires you to install software onto a Macintosh or PC, which acts as a drive on your computer and syncs with a remote server or the cloud. Once a file is saved on your Google Drive, it should also sync to the cloud. That means you can access your files from anywhere that has an Internet connection. The service will also be available on Android tablets, with Apple iOS devices in the works.

(AP) Swiss scientists have demonstrated how a partially paralyzed person can control a robot by thought alone, a step they hope will one day allow immobile people to interact with their surroundings through so-called avatars.

Similar experiments have taken place in the United States and Germany, but they involved either able-bodied patients or invasive brain implants.

On Tuesday, a team at Switzerland's Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne used only a simple head cap to record the brain signals of Mark-Andre Duc, who was at a hospital in the southern Swiss town of Sion 100 kilometers (62 miles) away.

Facebook grows to 901 million users

(CBS News) Facebook updated figures for its S-1 filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). New information about the social network's purchase of Instagram and AOL patents were also revealed.

The social network now reports 901 million monthly active users, 300 million photos uploaded per day and 125 billion friendships. The filing also shows that 488 million people access Facebook via mobile products.
