Student Section

Hi there! Are you troubled with homework hassles? Need some quick facts? Looking for impossible data about countries you've not heard of? Or are you supposed to make a pi-chart of languages spoken across countries? Rank the ten richest countries? The poorest? Find the age/sex ratio of the people in Tibet? The GDP of Italy? The population pyramid of China? You've come to the right place. We'll do our best to give you all the details we can and make your life generally easier.

Let's start at the very beginning. Is your search for facts country-specific? Do you need multiple details for just one country? If the answer is yes, it might be best to start with the country listing. You'll see all the countries of the world listed here in alphabetic order. Just select the country you want and proceed from there.

If you are not really looking for stats of countries, but just the maps, you need to start with our Maps section. Or maybe you'd prefer the flag listing we have of all the countries of the world.

You'll find the data for each stat shown in graphical format when you click on the name. You can just copy the numbers you require for your homework. You may print out NationMaster graphs provided that you keep the NationMaster logo as it is found on the page and use the information for non-commercial, educational purposes only. This also applies to pie-charts, scatter plots and correlations.

The statistics we have here are all about comparing countries or geographic entities (like, say Antarctica). We currently don't have anything for internal divisions of countries, barring some. Which means that if you are looking for the number of adult smokers in Alabama, you're out of luck. But anything involving country data, you'll probably luck out here.

So that you don't have to run through the complete listing of over 5,000 data sets searching for your needle in our haystack, we've divided the statistics we have into a list of categories. To make it easier, there's also a list of maps and graphs under each category.

Are you disappointed in the lack of tests your teachers give you? Probably not, but nevertheless, NationMaster is here to help! We've created a new GeoLab online quiz that uses NationMaster's statistics and graphing tools. Simply type in your teachers e-mail address on the bottom of the page and the results of your lab are sent directly to their inbox. Don't worry though, this isn't any ordinary quiz; it allows you to use all of the great features of NationMaster and get credit!

Click here to use NationMaster's GeoLab

To sum it all up, you can kick off your search for answers at the following pages:

We've collected some questions commonly asked by students in a separate page. Why don't you check if other students have faced similar problems as you and if they solved them? Who knows, you might just get new ideas for your homework assignments!

The comments section below is meant to function as a forum where you can request and receive help from fellow students and our editors. So, if you need something not available on the Students FAQ page, ask for help! Someone will point you in the right direction. Just fill out the form below!

In response to Jiya:

India became independent on 15 August 1947. Pakistan became independent one day earlier on August 14 1947. At that time, British India was divided into Pakistan (with two sections West and East) which was Muslim and India which was largely Hindu.

This division was never satisfactorily completed. In 1971, East Pakistan seceeded from Pakistan and became the separate nation of Bangladesh. The status of Kashmir is still under dispute. Pakistan controls the northwest portion, India controls the central and southern portion and the People's Republic of China has occupied the northeastern portion.

Other countries which became independent on August 15 in other years include The The Republic of Congo 1960, Bahrain 1971, North Korea 1945 and South Korea 1945. Thi sinformation is available on the independence page in the government category.

In response to Shanavas:

Socioeconomic status indicates the position of a family in society. It is mainly based on family income, parental education level, parental occupation.

Families with high socioeconomic status generally have easy access to information on health, social, emotional and cognitive development of their children. They are also better able to provide their young children with books and toys and encourage their children's learning.

In response to Theo:

Which country is the poorest depends on how you measure wealth.
Some methods of determining wealth include:

Any measure of wealth is incomplete on its own. To gain a balanced overview several of these measures should be consulted and compared.

Using these criteria, Sudan ranks between 21st and 30th poorest countries in Africa and between 32 and 96th poorest in the world. This indicates that poverty in Sudan is about average for the African continent. As countries in Africa are typically poorer than those on other continents, the conclusion can be made that Sudan is one of the world's poorer countries.

Hi Natalie, the important dates for the Twentieth Century include the the Russian Revolution in 1905, the start of WWI in 1914, the 'Great Depression' that started in 1929, the start of WWII in 1939, the dates when dozens of former colonies worldwide successfully declared themselves independent of colonial powers, the invention of nuclear energy in 1930, the first moon landing by a manned craft in 1969, the launch of computing systems in the early 1960s. Hi Vivian, Fra Luca Bartolomeo de Pacioli (1445 - 1517), an Italian mathematician, introduced the 'Venetian method' of keeping accounts known as 'Double-entry book-keeping'. He became a Franciscan friar in the 1470s and, alongside, remained a travelling mathematics teacher until in 1497. For more, see: http://www.nationmaster.com/encyclopedia/Luca-Pacioli.

Queen Margot, Queen of France and Navarre, was born in 1553 and died in 1615. Her real name was Marguerite de Valois, and she was related to the famous author of the same name. She was the daughter of Henri II and Catherine de Medici. Three of her brothers – Francois II, Charles IX, and Henri III – became kings of France.

She was wedded to Henri de Borbon (later Henri IV) in a marriage intended to create harmony between Catholics and Huguenots. In 1592, negotiations began to dissolve her marriage to Henri IV, which were finally concluded in 1599. She died in Paris on May 27, 1615, and is buried in the Chapel of the Valois.

Dorothy, the ethnic strife in Rwanda began when the land was partitioned between the Hutu and Tutsi population when Rwanda became independent in 1962. The current war started in 1990, when the Tutsi-dominated Rwandese Patriotic Front invaded Rwanda from its base in Uganda. The retaliation by Hutu militia is said to have resulted in the killing of over 900,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus. The International Tribunal for Rwanda under the UN was set up in 1994.

Subita, Ernest Hemingway was one of the 20th century's most important and influential writers, who won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1954. Among his best known books are 'The Old Man and the Sea', "A Farewell to Arms' and 'For Whom the Bell Tolls'.

Michael, the text of the UN Resolution 181 (ii) which mandated the partition of Palestine and established the state of Israel, does not list the voting pattern of the members of the General Assembly. What is known is that the 1947 Partition Plan proposed by the UN, dividing Palestine into jewish and Arab territories, Israel and Palestine, was supported by 33 UN members and opposed by 13, while 10 abstained.

Nabilah, do you mean 'Qin'? Shih-Huang was the most powerful of the Qin Dynasty of China, also known as the Chin Dynasty, which had the shortest rule (221BC-207BC). The Qing Dynasty was established in the 17th century and lasted till the Communist Revolution in the 20th century.
