Ralf Nuhn

Research Fellow and Lecturer in Fine Art

Ralf Nuhn is a German-born intermedia artist who has exhibited and performed internationally. Since 2003 he has developed a shared artistic practice with Cécile Colle (aka Cécile Colle}{Ralf Nuhn). Their work reflects on the human position in a world oversaturated with technology, through reworking the (im)possibilities of exchange proposed by our environment. Generally they are looking for a kind of interaction with the spectator. At least her position with regard to the artworks is essential. The interface is usually regarded as a meeting point between subject and object, a place for exchange, for action and reaction, sometimes even a tangible access to the artwork. For Ralf and Cécile it seems necessary to doubt the promise of the interface and to question the idea of interactivity being synonymous with communication, dialogue or exchange.

Their current project ParaSites explores the potential for using behaviours and strategies of parasites as a model for sculptural propositions in the built environment. They are interested in investigating how these sculptural interventions might be situated within current practice and thought concerned with the relation of architecture to our new, technologically-mediated way of being-in-the-world. Furthermore, what might be the relationship between current ideas regarding the implantation of new technologies within the human body and the parasitic invasion of the architectural body?
