The VERTEX Project: designing and populating shared 3D virtual worlds in the primary (elementary) classroom

Year : 2003

Following a presentation about the VERTEX project at SIGGRAPH (in San Antonio, 21-25 July 2002), Moar was invited (with Bailey) to submit an article for a special edition of Computers and Graphics. This ACM publication is an international journal which usually covers technical aspects of generating computer graphics for the academic and commercial community. The paper the authors submitted expanded the SIGGRAPH paper, enlarging on details of producing 3D graphics within an educational context. In particular the paper describes the development and use of a new methodology for creating 3D content within a working classroom.

The paper also provided an opportunity to present Moar’s more recent ideas about the technical foundations for carrying out research on children’s construction of 3D worlds. These ideas were developed further in the FATHOM project (presented at the National Maritime Museum, June 2004 as a joint paper with Bailey).

The authors’ experience in carrying out this classroom based research led to a further research project, HistorySpace, currently being undertaken with colleagues from the Psychology department within Middlesex University, and coordinated with Boyd Davis. This work was awarded £70,000 by Leverhulme Trust, December 2006.
