The paper is concerned with visual and interaction design using text. It highlights the current neglect of text as an interface element, and suggests reasons why this may be so. It offers some accounts of the role of visual design for text and recommends one approach. A review is made of the strengths and weaknesses of current display typography in relation to designing interactive multimedia. Finally, the potential for using text as a fully integrated component of multimedia products is highlighted using two projects undertaken in the Centre for Electronic Arts at Middlesex University.
