About Coldspring

Coldspring is the county seat of San Jacinto County which is named after the river that traverses it and shares its name with the Battle which gave Texas its independence.  Click here for history of San Jacinto County.  Coldspring offers local and nearby restaurants, hotels and facilities.  Houston, the 4th largest metropolitan center in the United States, is approximately 55 miles to the south and has major health centers and tourist attractions such as the Johnson Space Center, Astrodome, and world class business and shopping districts. 

Coldspring is approximately 45 minutes to the north of Bush Intercontinental Airport - IAH. Houston Hobby Airport is just south of downtown Houston.

Sam Houston State University is located in Huntsville, to the west of Coldspring.

Sixty miles west is College Station, home of Texas A & M University and the Bush Presidential Library.

There are approximately twenty-five (25) golf courses within a 50 mile radius. The Sam Houston National Forest, Lake Livingston, or Double Lake is where campers and hikers can choose accommodations waterside or woodside.  The area is approximately 15% privately owned land where the rest is national forest, paper company land and tree farms. There is the finest lake fishing anywhere, sailing and skiing are superb and history abounds.

More than 3 dozen historical markers, homes of Sam Houston and the 2nd Texas Governor, George T. Wood are great places to learn Texas history.

Visit the Historic Heritage Center, Old Town Coldspring, the 1887 Jail Museum, the oldest continuously active United Methodist Church in Texas.

There are antique store, art studios, public libraries, tennis, country club, marinas and an air strip.

Welcome to
Coldspring, Texas!

Historians say the town was originally named Coonskin when it was founded in 1847. However, there are some old timers in Coldspring who say the Coonskin name was never used. Historical markers round about tell its history.
