UPPER SODA SPRINGS
PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE
ALONG THE SISKIYOU TRAIL
Images of the past are a fascinating reminder of memories forgotten or barely remembered.  Or perhaps still more intriguing, windows into stories and people we never even knew existed.
The pictures on these webpages will tell the story of a place along the Siskiyou Trail:
Upper Soda Springs, California - the Heart of the Siskiyou Trail.
Upper Soda Springs in today's north Dunsmuir, California (pictured above in the 1880s), was an important waystation along the Siskiyou Trail between California and the Pacific Northwest.  Because of the rugged mountain terrain of northern California and southern Oregon, trails and roads coming down from the north or up from the south had to pass through this spot along the Sacramento River.
Beginning at least 5000 years ago, and probably much longer ago than that, people began to travel through Upper Soda Springs, sample its tasty mineral water, and fish or hunt there.  Some stopped to make it their home.
