CCP investigation into 'suicidal player jokes'

Eve Online studio says it never condones 'abhorrent' mocking of depression-afflicted users

[UPDATE: Eve man ashamed and sorry for suicide jokes]

Icelandic studio CCP Games has launched an internal review into allegations that a player who “indicated suicidal thoughts” was publicly mocked at last week’s FanFest convention.

A panel discussion, moderated by CCP staff and featuring a Council of Stellar Management member, reportedly featured video of in-game communication between two Eve Online players, where one showed "obvious" signs of severe depression.

According to an eyewitness account by Eve Online player ‘Kestrel’, many on the panel and in the audience “all had a good laugh" at the player’s expense.

"The [unnamed] presenter went on to encourage other players of Eve Online to harass this player in the hope that he would eventually be compelled to act on his suicidal thoughts,” read Kestrel’s note, sent to Eurogamer.

“I found this section of the presentation to be in extremely poor taste,” he said.

CCP, months away from the full release of its PlayStation 3 freemium shooter Dust 514, has moved quickly to act on the allegations.

"We are undertaking a full internal review of this panel as well as the process used for vetting the panel's materials,” said CCP public relations boss Ned Coker.

“Even though this panel was billed as unfiltered by CCP, we expect public presentations to be courteous and professional towards others,” he added.

"CCP in no way condones the harassment of players, especially those who suffer from depression or suicidal thoughts, as we understand the possible consequences of such abhorrent behaviour. While the content of online interactions between players cannot realistically be gated within our game worlds, we do take very seriously accusations of such behaviour between our players.

"Furthermore, we have a suicide hotline protocol which has, in specific cases, made a difference for several unfortunately troubled players.”

Well, this is a poor choice of words.

Video of the incident is freely available online and was streamed live, so why exactly are you listening and reporting the testimony of one attendee?

Anyone with any sense can see that the statement was made as a joke; you cannot honestly believe he stood in public and advocated forcing someone into suicide, with the expectation that his death would be the result?

All the way up to 3/10? Impressive they got that much from you.

If you actually WATCHED the video which is on Youtube (of the Alliance Presentation where this actually occurred) there was NO video of the player or the communication, only TEXT of in-game communications/EVEMails.

Do your research before you post idiocy.

"NO video of the player or the communication, only TEXT of in-game communications/EVEMails"

So what you're saying, is ... actually I have no idea.

My point is the exact communication the guy sent to Mittens was broadcast. Mittens' full comments are also free for all to see. What is missing, here? The exact content that is being discussed is available in it's entirety on YouTube.

My point is quoting this tool saying "obvious severe depression" is completely misleading, since the evemail could also, equally, be simply an attempt to emotionally blackmail his way into getting what he wants.

If anyone can watch that video and think he was actually suggesting people make him commit suicide then they need a sense of humour transplant, seriously.

Tasteless, yes, but lets not all act like someone was actually suggesting death should be the outcome.

Whether or not it *might* have been a troll, CCP cannot take that chance. The report of it may have been overblown, but the response from CCP in taking it very seriously is exactly what they should do.

There are logs showing the "suicidal" player in question joking about committing suicide to stick the blame to The Mittani. The player is a drama queen and this is an overly dramaticized account of what went on at fanfest, I didn't even catch it until all this stuff blew up.

lol, I love how the supposed info comes from a first hand spectator, gonna tell you right now that guy is a CSM alternate looking to make it onto the council. As for the actual words of mittins, if you have ever been in any World of Warcraft bg 20X worse things happen all the time, the only reason this is notable is someone stands to gain from this.

Kick the Mattani, he's not interested in the eve community just bigging himself and his alliance up. If people could vote once for their fav CSM candidate and once agaist their least favorite I bet he would have been -10,000 votes
