Registration FAQ

Last updated: April 2, 2007

Why should I register?

Because it will give you access to our archives (after 7 days) free of charge, and the more we know about our users the more we can improve the site and its contents. Also those who wish to receive The Japan Times E-mail News Service need to register.

* We are no longer requiring readers to register in order to read Japan Times Online content more than seven days old. However, those who wish to receive The Japan Times E-mail News Service must register.

Why do you ask so many questions?

For two reasons:

  1. To improve our Web site and customize it for different segments of users.

  2. To develop a statistical profile of our users. The Japan Times Online does not share information about an individual with third parties. We only share aggregate and anonymous information, such as "how many of our readers are female," or "how many readers are XX income bracket," and so on.

We will never share anything that would link your identity to specific information. For more information, please see our Privacy Policy.

In short, to add value to the site, we have to ask you a few questions. The Japan Times is a commercial entity, and our revenue model is based on the sales of online advertising. We want to ensure our advertising clients that they are reaching the desired demographic.

Is it safe?

Protecting your private information is our top priority, and to that end, we vow to maintain a high level of security.

Won't I receive unwanted e-mails if I register?

We will not share your e-mail address with any third party without your prior permission. If The Japan Times Online e-mails you, it will only be for specific purposes outlined in the Privacy Policy. You may opt-out of this service at any time (for details, please contact The Japan Times Digital Media Division)

In what other ways do you collect information?

We collect aggregate information about user traffic via http cookies (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTTP_cookie). We want to know what kind of browser you use, for example, or the language of your computer's OS. Cookies give us a way to track site-wide traffic and ultimately enhance the users' experience. By tagging your browser, we can recognize when you return to the site and allow you to log in automatically without typing in your e-mail address or password.

Can I update my information?

Yes. Once you register, you may update your profile at any time. From the top of any page, you can click on Your Profile and edit your registration information.

Why do I have to log in each time?

If you have to type in your log-in information each time, maybe you should consider trying an alternative browser. Some browsers, such as Internet Explorer or Firefox, can remember your log-in information. Also, please check to see if cookies are enabled on your browser. Cookies are commonly used to store account information that can be used when the website is revisited at a later date, and they do not include your personal information.
