Having a fun day with archery is the focus of the Kansas Secretary of State Ad Astra Archery Tournament set for April 21.

The tournament will allow archery-trained students the chance to compete and give others an opportunity to try their hand at hitting the bull’s eye.

The tournament starts at 8 a.m. at MacLennan Park, at S.W. 6th and Fairlawn in Topeka.

There is no registration fee and participants should preregister by Thursday at www.sos.ks.gov.

There are activities and archery competition for kindergarten through 12th grade. The park’s fishing ponds are available along with a learn-to-shoot lane.

A medallion will be presented to each preregistered participant.

JIM BYBEE AND BOB THOMAS, of Benton, won the Kansas Crappie Trail opening tournament at El Dorado Reservoir on April 1 with 11.18 pounds of fish.

Winds gusted to more than 20 mph, but several teams broke the 9-pound mark.

The Bybee-Thomas duo took home $612.

The Greg Graham and Ruth Ross duo, of Louisburg, were second with a 9.63-pound effort. Ross caught the big crappie that weighed 1.81 pounds.

The fourth-place prize was won by Mike and Eric Schrock, of Lawrence, with 9.26 pounds of fish.
