Today, on October 1, the International Day of Older Persons is observed all over the world. It was established 20 years ago, following a resolution of the United Nations General Assembly. Many social organizations, including those in our country of course, undertake charity campaigns on this day. But take into account that as life expectancy grows, the perception of who is considered "old" and "pensioner" changes. In Spain, as life expectancy is 80 years, now the Government has established the pension age at 67 (by then most Russian men would have died) My father is 79 years old and 1/ He still drives a car 2/He and my 68 years old mother still go out and have dinners until midnight many days with their friends. So what the Russian people thinks about being "old" will change during the next decade. While now probably most Russians consider "old" somebody who is 65 years old, in a decade only those who are 75 years old or more will be considered "old". Here in Spain I hear many times: "He was still young when he died: just 66 years". Dying with less than 75 years in Spain is something strange.

The elderly are an asset and many would like to be included and needed by their society. Giving the elderly an interesting retirement through volunteering at schools, directing crowds at events, greeting fellow Russians and sending them on cultural tours is a good way to keep their life interesting. Many elderly enjoy fishing but there are few programs that welcome the elderly in this activity. Salmon fishing in Scotland, Tuna fishing in Hawaii. These are good opportunities to spread friendship to other cultures. The elderly can be a good "friendship corps" to the rest of the world.
