Previous Map Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk

Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk is a town located in the south-eastern part of the far eastern Sakhalin Island, 10,417 km from Moscow with a population of 175,000.

Despite a comparatively short history – it was founded in 1905 – the town’s life has been very rich in events, as it was first used as an exile for convicts before being annexed by Japan and then passing over to the Soviet Union in 1945, and later to Russia. Thus, tourists can see Japanese-style museums and banks next to Orthodox churches here, as well as a monument to the Soviet leader Vladimir Lenin.
