Murmansk is a comparatively young city – less than 100 years old, it is full of Soviet-era monuments and boasts the statues of famous polar explorers and Bolshevik party activists. The symbol of Murmansk is the “Alyosha” – a 31.5-meter-high monument to those who defended the polar regions in World War II.
