Krasnoyarsk is a perfect city to break the myth of bears roaming around in Siberia. Situated in this famous Russian region, on the banks of the Yenisey River, it is in fact a major economy and cultural hub with a population of a little less than a million. It is the administrative center of the country's second largest federal subject — Krasnoyarsk Krai. It is the biggest city in Eastern Siberia and the Far East.
The great fire of 1773 destroyed the city almost to the ground — only 30 houses were left. Pyotr Moiseev, a land surveyor commissioned from another Siberian city, Tobolsk, which worked out the linear plan for Krasnoyarsk’s streets, resembling that of St. Petersburg. That is why the streets in Krasnoyarsk are straight and even, unlike in many other Russian towns that were growing spontaneously. Today you will see here modern buildings neighboring historical mansions and old churches, enjoy the views from the embankment, have a chance to learn a lot about ships visiting the Museum of Navigation in the Yenisey basin and the Steamer-Museum "St. Nicolas".
Winter sports lovers would like Krasnoyarsk: you do not need to leave the city for mountain skiing, for there is a splendid Bobrovy Log fun park within its borders.
The main tourist site of the Krasnoyarsk Krai is the National Reserve "Stolby" ('pillars'). There one will meet the "forest giants" – huge rocks of extraordinary form and beauty.
