­The northern town of Kargopol is the administrative center of Kargopol district. A small and calm town, it is located on the left bank of the Onega River, five kilometers away from the river's mouth. Kargopol has an airport, several factories and plants.

Though the Kargopol coat of arms depicts a pagan ritual – the sacrifice of a sheep – historically it is known as a center of Orthodox icon painting. There are many beautiful ancient churches in the town and its surroundings. Also, Kargopol is famous for the traditional brightly colored clay toys, depicting folklore characters.

Those interested in the supernatural would be tempted by the rumors that the forests around Kargopol are inhabited by bigfoots or sasquatches.
