In the desert steppes of Kazakhstan there is a city, the name of which will always be associated with mankind’s quest for the stars. It was built to service famous Baikonur Cosmodrome and forms an ellipse around the world’s first and largest operational space launch facility.
The city is filled with reminders of its purpose and history. Memorials honor space exploration pioneers, streets and schools carry their names; it even has a full-size model of a Soyuz rocket-carrier. Constructed in the 1950s when the area was still part of the Soviet Union, Baikonur was later inherited by the Central Asian Republic of Kazakhstan and is now leased to Russia.
