Previous Next Map Baikal

Many words have been said, songs sung, pictures painted and movies made about this “Siberian Wonder” – the world’s oldest, deepest and most voluminous freshwater lake. Baikal is located in south-eastern Siberia, between the Irkutsk Region and the Buryat Republic, and has a surface area equal to that of such countries as Belgium, the Netherlands and Denmark. It is home to almost 2,000 plant and animal species, two thirds of which can be found nowhere else in the world.

Legends and tales cover Baikal like the morning mist, and many secrets lie hidden in its depths. Stories abound about its life-giving powers and its miraculous cures of seriously ill people.  Magic aside, it is worth going to Lake Baikal simply to be charmed by its beauty and splendor and to create a memory that will last forever. See the RT’s gallery of Baikal images and feel energized by this mighty, ancient lake.
