The whole history of Arkhangelsk from its birth till modern times is tightly bound to the maritime theme. The city lies on the banks of Northern Dvina River, close to where it flows into the White Sea.

Founded in 1584 upon the order of Ivan the Terrible, it was Russia’s very first seaport and for many years the only one in the country. It was also the birthplace of Russian shipbuilding, with the first state shipyard built here in 1693 by the decree of Peter the Great. In the 20th century the city became known as the “Gateway to the Arctic”. Numerous expeditions to the Polar region set sail from its docks.
