Places to Visit
Avondale Discovery Farm
Set in the picturesque rural landscape of Beverley, Avondale is the epitome of a working Australian farm. A drive through Avondale will reward you with fabulous views of undulating paddocks that are home to sheep and support crops of wheat, canola and oats. Nature trails through large pockets of bushland provide a haven for native plants and animals – kangaroos and emus can often be seen. Two friendly Clydesdale horses and an iconic blue heeler are also residents. The buildings dating from the 1840s illustrate the various stages of development and use of the property.
The value of Avondale as a pastoral property was recognised early with the land originally allocated to James Stirling, first Governor of the Swan Colony, in 1836. Over time subsequent owners added to the holding before it was eventually sold back to the Crown in 1910.
After various subdivisions the remaining land was vested in the Department of Agriculture in 1924 and used as a fully functioning agricultural research station committed to developing sustainable farming methods until 2009.
