Release of Offer Markdown Information for the Catalogue API

Friday, October 1st, 2010

A great extra service has recently been added for our Publishers. We have now added the ability to display offer markdown information within the Catalogue API Product Service.

bizrate-markdown-information

Previously, we offered actual price information tagged as <price> within the <Offer> element. Now we additionally provide the original price and related markdown percentage to allow for display of markdown information for each offer. In the event an offer is not on sale, the response will return a markdown percentage of “0.00″.

Sample XML:

<price integral=”29999>£299.99</price>

<originalPrice integral=”39999>£399.99</originalPrice>

<markdownPercent integral=”25.00</markdownPercent>

The release of these new fields should not impact you unless you have developed a means of auto-generating your XML handling code based on the XML schema document for the Product Service.  If you have done this, you will need to update your schema.

Don’t forget to follow us on Twitter for snappy release notifications!  You will now be able to see an example result set returned with this new value through our Catalogue API Interactive Documentation.  In order to access this documentation, you will need to log in with your Catalogue API Key & Publisher ID.  Once you are in there, view the Product Service Resource section.  At the very bottom of this section, you will see a link “[ + ] show test form”.  This will allow you to test out queries, viewing sample XML.

An Insider Interview With the Head of Shopzilla’s EU Publisher Programs

Monday, August 2nd, 2010

diana-scharpenberg-online-marketingWhat better way of getting an insight into the Shopzilla UK Publisher Program than listening to what Diana Scharpenberg, (Mgr, Online Marketing) herself has to say about the program? We asked Diana, who heads up Shopzilla’s EU Publisher programs, a few questions on affiliate marketing and the programs themselves.

Emma: Hi Diana, thanks for taking the time out to do this for us. It’s a great way for our readers to check out the program from an insider perspective. First of all, can you tell us a little bit about yourself and your experience in the online industry?

Diana: Hi Emma, I’ve actually been with Shopzilla about four years now in my role as Online Marketing Manager. The UK affiliate program was launched just over a year ago with the French and German programs following shortly afterwards. Personally, I’m now completely immersed in the affiliate world, not only because I work in the industry but also because I run a couple of my own personal sites, so I know how the story goes on both sides of the fence; being an affiliate myself who uses various programs as well as running Shopzilla’s. Before that, I actually studied Aviation in Germany (my home country) and went on to work in an online marketing role for Lufthansa.

Emma: Wow, sounds like exciting stuff! Four years is quite long…so you must know the company pretty well now?

Diana: Absolutely. I’ve worked with a lot of people here on a lot of different projects so there’s never a dull moment. It’s a fantastic company to work for so I was happy to launch the Publisher program. I welcome the opportunity to work with new Publishers everyday and the program’s steady growth since its launch confirms just how great an affiliate program it is.

Emma: So what do you look for in new Publishers? And do you have any advice to website owners who would like to try their hand at affiliate marketing?

Diana: For the most part, we look for quality websites. That is to say, Publishers who have great content, an already existing user/visitor base and generally a well established site. The program is free to join and pays on a CPC based model so to those affiliate marketers who wish to get started, try us out! My advice would be to really focus on matching the content of your site to your advertising. There’s no point having a site about golf, for example, and including our cosmetics banners. It just wouldn’t work. We take traffic quality very seriously and monitor it very closely for all Publishers. The Shopzilla Publisher Programs will only work if you take traffic quality as seriously as we do.

Emma: Could you give us a brief overview of the banners/products Shopzilla’s program offers?

Diana: Sure. We have a multitude of options in our Publisher portal including dynamic banners, text links, search boxes, stock banners and product pods which are all easily accessible in the portal. For the more experienced affiliate marketers, we also offer FTP Data Feeds and a soon to be released Catalogue API solution (September 2010). These last two really give affiliates even wider access to Bizrate’s inventory for a great comparison shopping integration. My favourites are actually the dynamic banners as you can not only choose the products you want to promote but also change the look to match your site’s design.

Emma: You mentioned Bizrate - why not Shopzilla?

Diana: Ah, the company origianlly started out as Bizrate but changed it’s corporate name to Shopzilla a few years later. We still have both the Bizrate and Shopzilla sites which run parallel but it is Bizrate itself which powers the Publisher Program.

Emma: I see. And what kinds of products can I advertise through the Shopzilla UK Publisher Program?

Diana: Pretty much anything. We have a broad range of products from niche to large scale, from clothing to perfumes and TVs to iPods. To find a particular product in our portal, it’s a really good idea to browse Bizrate’s site to find the product you want to promote. You just need to know the category tree of that product to then be able to find it in the Publisher portal.

Emma: Great advice there. One last question - as a Publisher I would want to know how my revenues are accrued. Can you give us a brief lowdown on earnings and redirects?

Diana: So as a starting point, earnings are accrued on a CPC based model whereby redirects sent through to our merchants generate earnings. As already mentioned, we are a very quality-focused affiliate program so actually have a system in place called Smartpricing which is not unlike Ebay’s Quality Click Pricing Strategy or the Google quality scores (amongst other quality assurance initiatives). This enables us to monitor the quality of traffic Publishers send through to our merchants. For high quality traffic there is great potential for high revenues and similar to other affiliate programs, these revenues are then paid out on a monthly basis, when the Publisher hits a £50 benchmark.

That’s all for now, folks. Diana has provided us with some great insight into the Publisher Program. Follow her on Twitter.

Shopzilla FTP Data Feeds

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

Add a shopping element to your website with the Shopzilla FTP Data Feeds

Build on or add your own price comparison element to your website

The Shopzilla team is proud to offer you FTP Data Feeds as part of our Publisher Program. This allows Publishers to build on or add their own price comparison section on their site.

About the Data Feeds

We allow you to download BizRate’s entire inventory of merchant product offers from one FTP location, comprised of approximately 1,000 individual product offer files in XML format and which is updated daily to provide the latest product offers.

It sounds easy but in order to be able to successfully integrate this product you will need to have the technological capabilities as well as the time necessary to make full use of the advantages this data feed can provide. It can be time-consuming but for those will the right resources, it is well worth the effort.

Advantages to the Shopzilla FTP-data feeds

- access to shopping content and ability to create the design of your choice at the same time.  Create your own shopping elements using XML and set up your own online shopping section on your website.

- affiliates can download either the entire BizRate inventory or specific categories of interest, thus millions of product offers can be used and displayed.

- flexibility in what and how you display - we enable you to pick and choose the information you wish to display on your site. Whether this be the merchant logo, delivery information, price or product description etc, you have the freedom to choose and to adapt it to your site.

About the API:

For those looking to add a price comparison element but who may prefer an API integration, we are looking at introducing our Catalogue API early next quarter so it would be perhaps best to wait those few extra months.

In the meantime, however,  start earning from today by implementing our large 600×600 dynamic asset pods which will add that comparison factor to your website. Your earnings will rollover each month and keep adding up until the Catalogue API is launched so you’ll never lose out. It will give you some extra pennies in the run up to its introduction on the UK market.

The great thing about the API is that it will enable you to dynamically retrieve product results from the BizRate catalogue which means no manual updating. Once installed, you can sit back and relax as the data is called automatically. The current feed product requires you as the Publisher to update your site in sync with Shopzilla’s daily updates - product offers may change, therefore it requires particular attention and time if you really wish to benefit from it.

Wishing you a very Merry Christmas

Wishing you a very Merry Christmas

We’d like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

It doesn’t seem so long ago that Halloween was the focus of all our festivities and now Christmas has arrived! Well, the last 9 months since the program first launched in the UK have been fantastic for us all.

Some highlights from 2009:

  • The launch of the French and German Publisher Programs in September and October
  • Introduction of our Dynamic Assets giving Publishers the freedom to choose the products they wish to advertise
  • The release of our ftp data feeds enabling Publishers to download the Shopzilla inventory either wholly or partially

We also attended some great events in 2009 including various networking events and in particular the A4uexpo Europe in Amsterdam in April, the E-Commerce held in Paris in September, DMexco in Munich also in September, Ad-Tech London and the A4UExpo both in October and not forgetting the monthly London Bloggers Meetup evenings. We’ve had the chance to meet some wonderful and really interesting people so we’re looking forward to a successful 2010!

The regular updates on the Publisher blog will begin again as usual in January so keep an eye out for the latest Publisher news.

On a final note it’s not too late for you to integrate your Christmas dynamic banners and reap the rewards for those Christmas sales.

See you next year!

Warm wishes,
The Shopzilla UK Publisher Team

API to be Released Early 2010 - Be One of the First to Know

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

For those of you looking to add a comparison shopping element to your website but who aren’t necessarily super-technically minded or who perhaps just don’t have the time to manage ftp data feeds, we’re excited to tell you that our Catalogue API is coming soon!

What is the Catalogue API?

For anyone who is not familiar with the Catalogue API, this product provides advanced publishers with intuitive access to BizRate’s inventory of catalogued products and merchant offers through a query-based web service accepting various parameters, allowing publishers to filter based on their website’s shopping content needs. Based on these publisher-supplied parameters, customised BizRate shopping content is returned within an XML response.

The API will enable you to dynamically retrieve product results from the BizRate catalogue which means no manual updating. Once installed, you can sit back and relax as the data is called automatically. Commercial access to the API offers website publishers the deepest level of integration to ensure the most contextually relevant display of monetized shopping content.

Whereas the current Shopzilla UK FTP Data Feeds require you to update your site in sync with Shopzilla’s daily updates - our merchants often add new and remove old product offers and even change prices – the API takes away the need to update your product offers everytime they’re updated at the Shopzilla end.

Our API will be available early next year so watch this space for further updates!

*Please let us know if you are interested in this product and we will add you to our priority mailing list – you’ll be the first to know as soon as we release it. If you are not already an affiliate of Shopzilla, please apply for an account.
