Considering everything that Rovio has gone through with its multi-million selling Angry Birds franchise, it could’ve easily let success get to its head.  It could’ve sat back at all the cash raked in from the stuffed animals, fruit snacks and…sigh…upcoming CG movie and simply done nothing else for the rest of its career.  But no, like any intuitive game developer, it felt a challenge was necessary for its series, something new that would remind fans that they still gave a dang when it came to game development.  And say what you will about the company’s previous moves, but Angry Birds Space is that proof.

I’ve spent quite a bit of time with Capcom’s Street Fighter x Tekken, not only because I wanted to make sure to test out the online play and the additional PS3-exclusive fighters (y’know, “fat” Mega Man” and Cole McGrath from Infamous), but also because it’s not just another typical crossover fighter.  Yes, it combines characters from both Capcom and Namco’s respective fighting universes, but its controls are set up a little differently, rather than relying on the mechanics that worked so well in the Marvel vs. Capcom games.  That’s not a complaint by any means.  In fact, I can’t think of a hardcore fighting fan that wouldn’t dig into this thing like a treasure chest.  Casual fans, too.

The original Darksiders was a triumph for the newly founded (at the time) Vigil Games, headed up by comic book universe master Joe Maduriera (aka “Joe Mad”), telling a tale revolving around the apocalypse but making it kick-ass enough that fans of action games could truly appreciate it.  Granted, having Mark Hamill on board for voice acting didn’t hurt either.  So for the sequel, Darksiders II, the team had an even bigger task ahead, not only taking the game in a whole new direction, but introducing an unlikely hero – fellow Horseman Death – in the mix.  We recently gave the game a go with a hands-on session hosted by THQ, just to get an idea what it’s like.

So many bad reviews are making the rounds for Ninja Gaiden 3.  IGN’s probably hurts the deepest, as they gave it a 3 out of 10 and called it, more or less, the betrayal of a franchise.  Others were a little more fair than that, but just didn’t think that Ryu Hayabusa’s latest excursion of blood and madness wasn’t up to snuff with the first two.  Well, it’s kinda true, since Itagaki and several team members of Team Ninja departed Tecmo a while back, it’s been hard to match the level of madness that the first two games created.  Still, Ninja Gaiden 3 creates one that’s worthy, and it makes for an ideal ninja romp that’s well worth a look.

LittleBigPlanet has been thriving for a few years now, getting its start on the PlayStation 3 and attracting millions to its level-building community.  We’ve seen quite a few creative levels over the years, along with plenty of hilarious co-op opportunities and the kind of ingenious level design that only developer Media Molecule is capable of.  And while we await the next chapter in the series on PS Vita (coming this summer), we’ve got a first look at the latest project involving Sackboy and company, a kart racer from the folks that brought us ModNation Racers.

Thanks in part to the sales surge of Sony’s PlayStation 3, there are now Blu-ray Disc players in one quarter of U.S. households. Lower hardware prices for stand-alone BD players have also contributed to this growth. According to Centris Research, the installed base of Blu-ray players in U.S. homes was up 47% in Q4 2011 over the same quarter of 2010.

Never has a game’s ending generated so much negative reaction from the very fans who made that franchise a global blockbuster. Mass Effect 3 continues to anger fans, while receiving amazing reviews from game critics. BioWare has been using its blog to address the fan reaction to the game’s controversial ending. The company’s co-founder, Ray Muzyga, addresses the fans in an open letter to fans, which you can read below.

Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment has sold more than 1.2 million units of the action-fantasy film Immortals in its first week. Nearly half of those sales were for Blu-ray versions of the game and 10% were for the 3D Blu-ray combo pack. Actor Henry Cavill (Man of Steel) talks about the 3D movie in the exclusive video interview below.

Before Crystal Dynamics became known as the studio that saved Tomb Raider from a fate worse than Death (c’mon, Core Design was lagging with Angel of Darkness), they had worked on a number of original franchises.  Among them was Legacy of Kain, which was handed to them after Silicon Knights worked on Blood Omen for PS One.  The team configured the series into a third-person action/adventure game, one featuring a reaver named Raziel working his way through a dank underworld, seeking revenge on Kain for actions that can’t be undone.

When Quantic Dream developed Heavy Rain for the PlayStation 3 a couple of years ago, it may not have pushed the way games play that far forward (it’s about on the same interactive level as, say, Dragon’s Lair), but it certainly shook up the depth of how a game presents itself.  Very few games can match up Heavy Rain’s effort, with its in-depth characters, gorgeous environments and incredible interaction.  It’s still considered a triumph in some eyes…and it looks like the team is just getting started.

Mark Meer is a Canadian-based actor, writer and improviser. He is a proud member of the Rapid Fire Theatre group and founded the sketch comedy/improv group, Gordon's Big Bald Head. Mark is most known for voicing Commander Shepard in Bioware's "Mass Effect" series. With the franchise wrapping up, I got a chance to ask Mark a few questions and had him reflect on the series, including what the future holds for Commander Shepard.
