Game Developers Conference 2012 is just about to kick off here in San Francisco, but Electronic Arts started the party off right last night with a private event.  Not only did the company show off some promising new maps for Battlefield 3, but it also stunned the audience with the first official gameplay footage from Medal of Honor: Warfighter, which wages war on store shelves this October.

Since its release last year, Battlefield 3 has been gaining quite a community of driven first-person shooting fans, thanks to its realistic shooting action and intense situations.  However, said community hasn’t been crazy about the fact that the game has only seen one true expansion so far, the Back To Karkand pack.  Well, Electronic Arts resolved this last night at an event here in San Francisco, announcing not one but three new expansion packs that will help bolster the first-person shooter’s longevity.

The Game Developers Conference is literally hours sway from kicking off, but the fun has already begun down here in San Francisco.  Monday night, Warner Bros. Games hosted an event for Lollipop Chainsaw, its upcoming action game from Suda 51, the creator of such games as No More Heroes and Shadows of the Damned.  If you remember how crazy those games got, you’ve probably got a rough idea of what Juliet brings to the picture – including her heart-encrusted chainsaw.

Zipper Interactive has been in the military shooter market for quite some time, tearing up system after system with SOCOM U.S. Navy Seals exploits.  We thought that the team would continue said exploits on the PlayStation Vita, but apparently it had a different approach in mind for it with Unit 13.  Instead of taking you through a full-fledged campaign with objectives that span across huge levels, it instead takes the “bite-sized” approach, going with smaller, more intense missions.  And surprisingly, this works for the better.

It’s been nearly five years since fans last saw Master Chief helm the "Halo" saga, but things have sure changed since then. Bungie, the original creators of the franchise, are no longer working on the game. 343 Industries is now helming the project and is shaping the next generation of "Halo" saga with all the games shifting from the Forerunner saga to the Reclaimer saga.

People could argue for hours on end about which Metal Gear Solid game was the best.  Some would say that the original PS One release can’t be beat; others feel that Peace Walker was a significant move forward for the series; and some will even swear up and down about Sons of Liberty rocking hard, even with the odd inclusion of a nude Raiden.  However, most of the consensus believes that Snake Eater, the third chapter in the series, is truly significant, if only because it takes place in a different time, telling the story from a new point of view.  And if you somehow missed this story, you have another chance to catch it, this time on the Nintendo 3DS with Metal Gear Solid 3D: Snake Eater.

While the game developer was exploring the Italian Renaissance in its latest Assassin’s Creed games, Ubisoft had a team working for the last three years on the American Revolution-set Assassin’s Creed III. The first screenshots of the much-anticipated big game of 2012, which ships October 30, 2012, can be seen below.

BAFTA award-winning Danish composer Jesper Kyd, renowned for his iconic musical scores in the Assassin's Creed and Hitman series, has crafted a thrilling original score for DARKSIDERS II, the sequel to the critically acclaimed action/adventure title developed by THQ's in-house studio Vigil Games. Kyd's emotionally dynamic score for DARKSIDERS II combines dark ethereal themes and melodic fantasy that enrich the player's cinematic journey through each of the game's unique realms. One of the big games of 2012 will ship for PC and consoles on June 26.

With Asura’s Wrath, Japanese game publisher Capcom and developer Cyberconnect 2 are entering into new territory. The new science fiction action game is set in alternate reality called Gaea, which blends sci-fi elements with Asian mythology. The new game, which is expected to launch a new franchise for Capcom, was developed using Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 3. Gameplay blends shooter action with brawling for a very different action experience.

Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed franchise has explored the Middle Ages and the Italian Renaissance. The latest game in the franchise is sticking closer to home. Assassin’s Creed III has been confirmed by the game maker to be set during the American Revolution. This offers a ripe area of exploration that hasn’t been visited in gaming save for an obscure RTS game, American Revolution: Battle for Freedom.

Doing a “director’s cut” of a game is nothing new in the game industry.  A lot of companies have come through with Game of the Year editions, featuring extra downloadable content right on the disc or offering a small bonus to those who may have missed out on the game before.  This time, it’s Mortal Kombat’s turn, and one of 2011’s best games, a successful relaunch of a long-running fighting franchise, gets a great package with the Komplete Edition.

Usually, when Square Enix announces a launch title for a new system, it’s something that’s from their storied library of role-playing games or, as of late, a resurrection of a franchise from Eidos, like Tomb Raider.  But with the PlayStation Vita, it turned to an unlikely source for inspiration with its debut title – hell.  Yep, in Army Corps of Hell, you’re a demonic overlord who’s been wrongfully unseated from his throne – and it’s up to you and your goblin horde to reclaim it.

Ask any “hardcore” gamer what really put them to the test over the years, and chances are they’ll mention one of the Ninja Gaiden games, either the original 2004 Xbox release or its predecessor, Ninja Gaiden Black.  Those games REALLY know how to push someone’s buttons when it comes to testing their gameplay skills, thanks to brutal enemies who don’t know how to quit.  But come on, did you really expect the trial of a ninja to go so easily?
