When Orcs Must Die released last year for PC and Xbox Live Arcade, it introduced players to a solid mix of hack-and-slash action and strategy, as you had to prepare defenses for an invading swarm of goblins while also using any weapons you had on hand to cut them down to size.  The game turned out to be a big hit, but Robot was disappointed that, according to their press release, “only 3.4 billion orcs have been slaughtered to date”.  (Well, we’re SO sorry!)  With that, the company is moving forward with a sequel, which will be hitting PC this summer, and hopefully consoles soon after.

I admit, I was a little concerned about how Silent Hill: Downpour would turn out.  When I played the game at Konami’s booth last year at E3, I couldn’t quite get the hang of it, even though I’ve easily gotten into Silent Hill games in the past.  And considering the disappointing treatment of Silent Hill HD Collection last month (two games for $50, and with all kinds of glitches), I was fearing the worst.  But despite a few problems, Silent Hill: Downpour weathers the storm well enough to please fans of the long-running survival horror series.  Don’t expect a miracle by any means, but do expect plenty of scares and a good, engrossing story.

With the first movie continuing to break box office records with $61.1 million in its second weekend and $364.9 million overall, this new game will serve to bridge the gap between movies. Three more films are planned.

Recently, Sony Computer Entertainment of America announced that it was looking to go with a more abstract library of games for its PlayStation Network service, stuff that was original while, at the same time, appealing.  So far, it looks like the job is getting done, with Dyad in the works and Papo & Yo coming soon after that, among other games.  But one game that should certainly be included in the group is Closure, a stunning example of black-and-white design, perfectly recreated for the downloadable front.

South Park games have been iffy over the past few years, mainly because Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the creators, didn’t really have any say in what was done to them.  As a result, Acclaim milked the franchise to death on earlier platforms, leaving a sour taste in the mouths of long-time fans.  Lately, the duo has been getting more involved in its digital affairs, teaming up with THQ and Obsidian for an epic action/RPG game coming later this year.  Before then, we have Other Ocean Interactive’s South Park: Tenorman’s Revenge, an elaborate multiplayer platformer that definitely rises above Acclaim’s stinky efforts.  Still, it could’ve been better.

PopCap Games is on a roll, aren’t they?  It seems no matter what they release as of late, it’s destined to suck up hours of your time without any hesitation.  That’s the way it was with Peggle, Bejeweled, Plants vs. Zombies, etc. etc.  But one of the earlier games they got started with, Zuma, remains just as fresh as the day it came out, thanks to sharp ball-shooting physics and diverse levels.  So when we caught wind that the company was releasing a sequel, Zuma’s Revenge HD, for iOS devices, we – ahem – jumped at the chance to check it out.

Over time, unused programs clogged my memory and slowed down my computer considerably. I currently run windows vista on my Mac Pro, which is stacked with 8 gigs of ram and two Radeon graphic cards. I love my current set up, but I haven’t been able to get everything out my system that I would of hoped for. So where is the answer, how can I finally dethrone this problem and finally rage against the machine? The answer is simple with the latest software from iolo technologies called System Mechanic 10.7.

For all those times we praise certain series for making changes, there are also those instances where we’re wondering why a developer made such changes in the first place.  As great as some of the previous Final Fantasy games have been, many have been hunkering for the classic days of SNES releases like Final Fantasy III and so forth, rather than the big-budgeted Final Fantasy XIII.  Namco, thankfully, hasn’t changed too much when it comes to its Tales franchise, and the latest entry in the series, Tales of Graces F, clearly shows that.  It’s old-school love like we seldom get anymore.

A lot of people enjoy fighting games on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, we’re sure, but very few use regular controllers when taking on others.  Every time we go out to a tournament or some MLG-sponsored event, we always see folks carrying around these special FightSticks, as well as FightPads that are much more comfortable when it comes to executing techniques and special moves.  (Try doing that with a typical analog controller.)  Mad Catz is a master in this specialty, and while its new Street Fighter x Tekken-branded S.D FightPad may not replace the superior FightStick model, it’s an affordable alternative that fighting fans will truly love.
