KANSAS CITY, Mo. —

Jackson County prosecutors said they have charged a 17-year-old in connection with a burglary this week where a family's pet parakeet was killed.

Duncan S. Haynie, who last known address was a Blue Spring hotel, was charged with first-degree burglary and theft.

According to court records, Blue Springs police were called to a home in the 900 block of Northwest Canterbury at 11:45 p.m. Tuesday.

A woman who lives in the house said that Haynie got into the house while the family was asleep, according to police.

When police arrived, they said they found a set of keys belonging to the victims and prescription medication that had belonged to a family member in Haynie's pockets. Other items, including a Sony Playstation, had been placed in a bag.

Investigating officers said an adult Amazon parakeet had been removed from its cage in the family's living room and killed in the kitchen.

Prosecutors have asked for a $50,000 cash bond.
