    I just realized how funny it is to watch the face of whoever isn't talking. They're so emotive. Or maybe I'm just too hungover/strung-out and it isn't actually funny at all.

    Data is a plural. All plurals follow the pronunciation of the words they are derived from. Datum. I have never heard any English speaker say dah-tum. The "a" is always hard as in "date, make, fake etc." So, data follows the same principle, so it has the 8 sound.
    However, the whole argument is pointless. We each know what the person saying the word means.

    I wasn't "defending" anything. I was just pointing out how "beta" and "data" and pronounced in English compared to American. I wasn't directing any hostility towards barrel224 (I hope it didn't seem like I was), and the comment about correcting people wasn't even aimed at them - since as far as I can tell they didn't try to correct anyone. I was just meaning it in general.

    Just because it doesn't have an official English pronunciation doesn't change the fact that the majority of English people say "bee-ta". The fact that you don't probably indicates you're more used to hearing Americans say it.

    I don't know anyone that pronounces data as "dah-ta" either. I said "da-ta" with no emphasis on the "a" so it sounds similar to "kata". Which is how it is pronounced where I am from.
    "dah-ta" indicates a elongated "a" sound, and does indeed sound posh.

    As for Aluminum - Americans de-emphasis the "a" so much that sometime I can barely hear it or it sometimes sounds like "ill" rather than "AL". Thus why I wrote it that way. As for Aluminium - OK, I missed out a letter. So it would be "al-you-min-yum" or "al-you-min-ee-um" depending on the accent.

    NB: I'm English.

    Actually I pronounce Beta as 'bay-ta', it's an ancient Greek letter and has no correct English pronunciation. Also I don't know anyone in England who says 'dah-ta' that isn't 'very well spoken' (posh), everyone I know says 'day-ta'. Regardless it's derived from Latin, and in Latin 'a' is pronounced 'ah' meaning 'dah-ta' would be correct.

    As for Aluminium (which I presume is what you meant), it's an element who's original name 'Aluminum' was coined by Humphry Davy, a Chemist from Cornwall, England. It was changed to 'Aluminium' to better suit the periodic table of elements. The American Chemical society changed it back to 'Aluminum', hence the national differences. I've never known anyone say "al-you-min-um" or "ill-oo-min-um", since both are completely incorrect.

    I agree with you, most Americans don't know what true English is, and taking the piss is pretty ignorant, but if you're going defend it, do it properly.
