Servalan Returns!

(13/03/2012)
Servalan Returns! “The whole thing is done with care, research, love and respect” – Star One magazine on Blake’s 7: The Liberator Chronicles - Volume 1

Jacqueline Pearce, who now lives in Africa, has flown into the UK and is currently recording four brand new stories as the scheming and manipulative Servalan for the audio series Blake’s 7: The Liberator Chronicles. The series of enhanced audiobooks is being released in a licence deal with B7 Enterprises.

Servalan first wowed viewers with her stylish evening gowns, close-cropped hair and ambitions of power during the TV show’s first season in 1978. She went on to become a staple of the series over its four series, always plotting to bring down Blake, Avon and the crew of the Liberator.

Servalan will make her first appearance in Wolf by Nigel Fairs on Volume 2 of The Liberator Chronicles, which is released in August. The story finds Cally on a mission to discover what happened to the respected Auron scientist Gustav Nyrron (who appeared in the Volume 1 story Solitary) – and only Servalan knows the answer.

Wolf also stars Jan Chappell as Cally, while Anthony Howell (Foyle’s War) will be reprising the role of Nyrron.

The three-disc box set also includes The Magnificent Four by Simon Guerrier, which reunites Paul Darrow and Jan Chappell as Avon and Cally, who are abducted by a team of rebels that have stolen another ship from The System.

False Positive is by Eddie Robson, and stars Gareth Thomas as Blake and Beth Chalmers as Lian. Blake is under psychiatric evaluation on an alien planet – are his stories of subversion and rebellion just the ravings of a delusional mind?

Volume 2 of The Liberator Chronicles will be released in August 2012.

A range of new Blake’s 7 novels also launches in May 2012 with The Forgotten by Cavan Scott and Mark Wright.

Seventh Doctor Update

(09/03/2012)
Seventh Doctor Update Ian Hogg, who memorably played Josiah Smith in the TV story Ghost Light, has been reunited with Sylvester McCoy and Sophie Aldred in Protect and Survive, a new Doctor Who audio play from Big Finish. The story, by Jonathan Morris, also stars Elizabeth Bennett (Calendar Girls) and Peter Egan (Ever Decreasing Circles), and kicks off a pivotal mini-series for the Seventh Doctor and his companions.

“It’s a trilogy that is full of surprise appearances, disappearances and reappearances... and a few very nasty shocks, about which I can say no more!” teases script editor Alan Barnes. “In Protect and Survive, Ace and Hex go on the hunt for the missing Doctor – and find themselves stuck in a 1980s nuclear nightmare."

Next up is Black and White by Matt Fitton, which guest stars Stuart Milligan (Jonathan Creek, Richard Nixon in Doctor Who) as Garundel. “Black and White is our version of the saga of Beowulf – so expect Saxons, Vikings, monsters, dragons, broadswords and large quantities of mead!” says Alan. “Matt Fitton, who made his BF debut in last year's Recorded Time, has written a very clever script... which I promise will be especially rewarding for anyone who's been paying close attention to our Seventh Doctor range.”

The trilogy ends with Gods and Monsters by Mike Maddox and Alan Barnes, which guest stars John Standing (Game of Thrones, The Line of Beauty), Blake Ritson (Upstairs Downstairs, Doctor Who: The Lost Stories - The Foe from the Future) and Gus Brown (That Mitchell and Webb Look, Laurence and Gus).

“It's very difficult to say anything much about this one without spoiling all the surprises... but it's all set in one of the strangest, most deadly environments the TARDIS has ever landed in, with the Doctor's companions facing up to some very unpalatable truths about their past and future lives.”

October sees the release of Doctor Who - UNIT: Dominion, an epic four-hour full cast audio play from Big Finish in which the Seventh Doctor (Sylvester McCoy) and his companion Raine (Beth Chalmers) attempt to prevent universal collapse – with the help of some old friends…

'This is an idea that was suggested by my trusty line producer David Richardson,' explains executive producer Nicholas Briggs. 'We'd had such fun doing some stories with the character of Elizabeth Klein and the Seventh Doctor. The whole alternative future/history/Nazi aspect of her character is fascinating and Tracey Childs, who plays her, is just brilliant. In the final story of that mini-season, the Doctor and the Time Lords sort of re-jig Klein's history and she ends up being the scientific advisor for UNIT, in the Doctor's absence. So, we dared to imagine a new series of UNIT. And this is the result. Almost two years in the making and nearly a year to go until it's actually released. That's production schedules for you.'

As for what listeners can expect, Nick explains, 'It really is an epic. It's around the length of the classic UNIT adventure The Invasion; but it's not just one invasion going on here. There are aliens galore and all sorts of bizarre inter-dimensional shenanigans.'

Guest starring in UNIT: Dominion is Alex Macqueen, best known for his roles in The Thick of It and The Inbetweeners, who will be playing a pivotal role as… 'another Doctor!' explains Nick. 'Well, actually, that's all the explanation I'm giving at this stage. Alex is a superb actor and quite a devotee of Doctor Who. I remembered hearing and loving his performance in our Lost Stories release Paradise 5. When you hear a performance as good as that, you kind of keep it in your back pocket for a very special role in the future. So when this came up, I knew Alex was the man for the job, and we were extremely fortunate to get him.'

Benny - Legion and Beyond!

(08/03/2012)
Benny - Legion and Beyond! Big Finish Productions is pleased to confirm plans for the Bernice Summerfield audio adventures, following on from the recently-released Road Trip and the forthcoming charity project, Many Happy Returns.

A third box set, Legion, is due for release in September and features three new adventures. Vesuvius Falling, written by Tony Lee, sees Bernice and her friends investigating a millennia-old murder aboard a spaceship on a collision course with their new home. It guest stars Kai Owen (Torchwood), Andrew Hayden-Smith (Doctor Who's Jake Simmonds, Byker Grove) and Jennie Stoller.

The second instalment - Shades of Gray, written by Scott Handcock - finds Bernice and her friends forced to relive a trilogy of horror stories inside an old, dilapidated house on the dark side of Legion. A house where a valuable artefact is believed to have been hidden... Alexander Vlahos (The Indian Doctor, Doctor Who: The Gunpowder Plot) and Richard Franklin (Doctor Who's Captain Mike Yates) guest star.

The third and final adventure - Everybody Loves Irving - is written by Braxiatel's alter ego Miles Richardson, and sees Bernice's old acquaintance trying to rebuild her trust in him by means of an ill-fated shopping trip. Guest stars include Cameron Blakely, Matt Butcher and Andrew Macklin.

2013 will then see Bernice's adventures continue in two brand new box sets: a three-CD set entitled New Frontiers in April, followed by a bumper five-CD set - Missing Persons - later in the year.

Legion, New Frontiers and Missing Persons are now available to pre-order on CD and download. Many Happy Returns is also available to pre-order as a download only.

Many Happy Returns for Benny

(07/03/2012)
Many Happy Returns for Benny Big Finish Productions is pleased to announce a very special release to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of archaeologist and adventurer Bernice Summerfield. Many Happy Returns will be a unique feature-length drama where every penny will go to supporting the charity Invest in ME.

'Jac Rayner first approached Big Finish about possibly doing a small charity download late last year,' explains producer Scott Handcock. 'Gary Russell and I discussed the idea with David Richardson and quickly came to the conclusion that the Bernice Summerfield range would be the perfect platform - not least because of Jac's close connections with the character. So I started sounding out a few actors, writers, sound designers - as you do - and nobody we asked said no... so it ended up being the sort of epic rolling adventure we never anticipated!'

'It's amazing how many people have donated their time not only for Jac's charity, but for what will hopefully be a very special release for Benny fans. We've tried to reunite as many familiar faces as possible. It's the Bernice Summerfield equivalent of The Five Doctors - twenty years, a whole host of old friends, and all in the name of charity! I know I speak for everyone involved when I say it's been an absolute pleasure, honour and delight to work on - and one of the maddest days in studio we've ever had!'

Invest in ME works to raise awareness and funding into research of ME, a serious neuro-immune condition that affects 250,000 people in the United Kingdom. Its latest project - Let's Do It For ME! - is a patient-driven campaign raising vital funds for a Centre of Excellence at the University of East Anglia. The centre aims to translate scientific findings and evidence from research into applicable treatments for people suffering from ME, focussing on immunology and virology.

Big Finish stalwart Scott Handcock will also be running the Edinburgh Marathon in May on behalf of Invest in ME. For more information - or to sponsor him - please visit www.justgiving.com/scott-handcock/

Many Happy Returns will be released for download only later in the year. Please click on the link to pre-order and for full details on what the adventure has in store!

Podcast - March 001: February Catch-Up and Blake's 7 at BFD2 - 07 March 2012

(07/03/2012)
Podcast - March 001: February Catch-Up and Blake Gathered once more in the office, executive producer Nick Briggs, line producer David Richardson and employee of the year Paul Spragg take a look at some February titles that were overlooked in the rush of last month, namely The Companion Chronicles: The Selachian Gambit, Graceless 2 and Bernice Summerfield: Road Trip and The Weather on Versimmon. But there's also time for some dress-up, listener feedback, an anecdote about David Tennant's wedding reception and some flawless comic timing from Mr Richardson.

Of course, that wouldn't fill out an entire podcast (thankfully), so we also bring you the Blake's 7 panel from Big Finish Day 2! It includes a nine-strong contingent of people, namely producer David Richardson, sound designer Alistair Lock, writers Simon Guerrier, Nigel Fairs and Peter Anghelides, script editor Justin Richards, director Lisa Bowerman, Anthony Howell, who plays Nyrron, and the legendary Paul Darrow, the once and future Avon.

Find out how the first box set of Liberator Chronicles was put together - and lots more besides - when you scamper off to download or stream the podcast now!
