Check Out Kid Icarus: Uprising's Metroid-esque Enemy

One of the biggest surprises during my hands-on time with Kid Icarus: Uprising a couple months ago was discovering the upcoming 3DS title's strange link to another popular Nintendo franchise.

See, the original Kid Icarus on NES had a lot of the same people working on it as the first Metroid game. It also had similar gameplay and used the same engine, so some assets ended up being shared. Most of this sharing was pretty small, but one Kid Icarus enemy -- the Komayto -- looks almost identical to the titular enemy from the Metroid games.

Nintendo acknowledges this similarity, and it looks like they'll be keeping the connection alive in Uprising. Check out the short video below for a look at the komayto/metroid appearance in Kid Icarus: Uprising.

  • looking forward to this game

  • I love it when companies throw in little nods to other games. THis is probably one of my favorite examples.
  • Weird!!
  • Ive seen thoose somewhere else too, maybe zelda?
  • ha nice, I actually think it's kind of cool that they're doing that

  • Wow since I have never played Kid Icarus I never knew about that.

  • I believe that the guy that created Metroid first worked on Kid Icarus, so its understandable why metroids are in the game.
  • * Beware, Metroids are everywhere *....
  • Yep, those are Metroids.

  • That Metroid-like creature was in the original Kid Icarus. It was basically like a re-used character graphic from back in the day (money saver). I don't believe it was even remotely the only one.
  • Don't have a 3ds yet, waiting for the second model, but I'm really looking forward to this.

  • WOW!! Used to love this game when it first came out for NES in 87 Looking forward to it (= Second one was ok too for gamboy in 91
  • I'm surprise Pit doesn't have some cheesy quip about how they look like Metroids or something lol.

  • Reminds me of the cameos in Link's Awakening.

  • Its all good! No need to fix what isn't broken.

  • AWESOME!!! Now I really, really can't wait until Kid Icarus: Uprising gets released! These Metroids look so awesome!

  • I guess we all love Metroids a bit too much.

  • this looks like a decent game. Sad I don't own a 3ds

  • That's cool, now if Nintendo would kindly make a follow-up to Metroid Fusion (preferably for the 3DS in classic side-scrolling format, but taking advantage of the hardware capabilities to create modern looking advanced 2D graphics), we can all be happy.
  • Crossovers and cameos from other series is a staple of Nintendo games.

Almost every one of their main franchises has at some point featured a character, enemy, or reference to another Nintendo series.
