Well, I had an Exclusive Metal Gear on my N-gage Nokia phone before.
But yep, Serious Handhelds are still better.

phones will never replace serious portable gaming. anyone ever tried playing Devil may Cry, Sims 3 or Megaman on their phone? then you know how useless the touch screen controls are. it takes the fun out of the game.
phones are only good for games like bejeweled and angry birds, something you can play for 5 mins when you are bored and thats it.

i think the world needs a break from handhelds, or stop entirely due to phone apps. A break at least, since that's basically what we did after gameboy and sega game gear.

games on handhelds are for gaming, games on phones are for when you are bored while on toilet

I believe the reason why handhelds have been substituted out by smart phones is because of the time and place that you play with these devices. When at home it's a lot more comfortable if you're a serious gamer to play on your consoles and when you're out you're never going to have time for a 20 hour game and you just want something to pass the time and it is for these reasons that handheld systems will not prosper in today's market.

I like the new name for the show. It's much better then the old one...what ever that was.

I've got my eye on the Ps Vita, but only to see if the price will drop.

I don't think a dedicated device will survive long enough. Just like the job market, if you focus too much on a certain skill, how are you going to make yourself marketable outside the company?

Phones capable of gaming and social interaction will be the next best thing. PS Vita, though is great and full of potential, I don't think it's going to change the minds of casual gamers who are used to play cut the rope or angry birds.

Here is the simple thing. Handheld gaming and smartphone gaming are TWO DIFFERENT things. when you compare the 2 and the prices you are forgetting that smartphone gaming does not offer you the same experience. Handheld will offer you complete 20 hour games which are more fun and have more depth. smartphones games like angry birds or cut the rope are simple games meant to be cheap and simple, but fun. they are two different markets. even games like nova or other gameloft titles cannot be compared to handheld games, cuz they are short and limited in gameplay.

Comparing handheld to smartphone is like comparing a mansion to a bungalow. You pay more, but it's worth it.

when cellphones get awesome games as the current and past generations handleds then we talk
the cellphones games are only used when ure in a bathroom, waiting on some line, etc, the real handleds are when uare travelling, even when uare at home, the replay value, the quality and even controls are too inferior in cellphones

I can see the argument for cell phones/smart phones taking some of the market share from dedicated mobile game consoles. But, look at me. I really like playing video games. I have a desktop PC at home that I use 90% of the time to play games. I also own a PS3, but I like the PC better. Now I want a mobile game system. iPhone is fine but really doesn't have an ideal controller setup. A laptop isn't going to be THAT mobile and won't give me the desktop power that PC games really need. So I bought a PS Vita. I paid a lot for it, I think it's worth the price premium and it is what I wanted from a mobile gaming device.

This whole argument about whether or not smartphone will or won't totally replace traditional handheld gaming devices seems to be missing a step: if everyone truly does start looking to smartphones for portable games isn't it pretty likely that Nintendo and Sony will start combining their new devices with smartphone-like capabilities? Just look at the Vita, with all of it's 3G tech, which is accessible through Verizon. Heck, if you look at it a certain way, it even looks a little like a smartphone. My point is, if smartphones are the future, gaming companies will always be right with the trend.

    @Bog101

I am well aware that you can call people with a smartphone. However, keep in mind I said "capable of" not "doing". 3DS has a microphone, and some games (such as Pokemon) let you have live chats with people. It wouldn't be a big step to just have an application for doing so. Also, handheld gaming has merged with phones before, such as the "taco" thing around the 4:45 mark in the video.

I like playing games that are similar to the console version on a handheld, but sadly it isn't what most people want out of a handheld. Cell phones will take over the handheld market completely, and that is sad.

marty2004, not really man, unless cell phones become epic and buy out Nintendo, Sony and eveyone else, higlhy unlikly.... plus who would sign to who??? To much work and too much money.

I agree, cell phones will definetly replace all the dedicated portable game consoles. 250$ for the psvita......way to expensive. + don't forget the price of the memory sticks.

Here's my opinion about all this: unfortunately cell phones will get on top. These phones used to be simple and mostly used as... phones. Now, these babies pack nearly as much power as a nex gen portable console. I've seen really cool looking games on the iPhone. Sadly, not too many people will be able to shed out 249$ out of their pockets for gaming purposes only and the thing (PsVita) will surely stagger some time before drowning like it's older brother: The PSPGo.
