    Background & objectives

In recognition of the role public transport plays in boosting economic growth while respecting the environment, and in reducing congestion and providing mobility for everyone in ever-growing cities, UITP launched a strategy in June 2009 with the aim of doubling the public transport market share worldwide by 2025. The strategy identifies the key areas to be addressed by all mobility stakeholders (governments, operators, authorities, supply industry and investors), preferably in an integrated manner, in order to realise this ambition. The full UITP strategy is outlined in the document ‘Public transport: the smart green solution’ available here.

UITP members around the world are showing leadership by setting ambitious targets to improve the mobility offer in cities and regions. Ambitious plans, projects and initiatives are being developed with the aim of increasing the use of public transport. In order to share this best practice, and to motivate mobility stakeholders everywhere to aim for similar ambitious objectives, UITP has decided to award excellence under the slogan “PTx2” (or “public transport times two”).

The first UITP PTx2 Awards will be handed over at the 59th UITP World Congress and Exhibition in Dubai in April 2011.

The objective of this first edition of the PTx2 Awards is to recognise the efforts and reward the ambition of mobility stakeholders and their contribution to UITP’s strategy PTx2. In this respect, UITP will reward stakeholders who have defined plans and have launched or are about to launch ambitious projects or initiatives to grow public transport market share by putting into practice one or several of the strategic areas identified by UITP.
