'We're evolving Sears' Rainbow 6 vision' says Mallat

Previous creative direction still 'largely intact' despite lead devs being removed from project

Ubisoft’s upcoming Rainbow 6: Patriots title will evolve the vision of its previous creative directon despite removing the game’s lead staff, the publisher’s Montreal CEO has claimed.

Speaking to Game Informer, Yannis Mallat said that the David Sears’ departure from the project was a mutual decision, and he would be working on other titles within Ubisoft Montreal.

Yesterday it was reported that as well as removing the creative director, the studio had axed narrative head Richard Rouse III, lead designer Philippe Therien and animation director Brent George.

"We're definitely going on with Rainbow, too, evolving the vision that came from David's initial input," said Mallat.

Sears said that the development team behind the game was “still behind it”, but said another opportunity had arisen that he wanted to contribute to.

"To paraphrase Mark Twain, I'm not dead, and Rainbow is still very much alive," he said.

"I've watched the forum comments, and one of the things that's really important for everyone to understand is senior management and the editorial group challenged me to create something plausible, relevant, and that touches on the current fears of the US citizens to the point that I was almost surprised myself we were taking these creative risks.

“They are still behind it. I spent time working on it because I love it, but there comes a point where you give the vision to everybody and they embrace it and start telling me what the vision is now."
