The Bottom Line

While Ronin Warriors doesn't have a lot of "grit" to it compared to some of the more recent animes available, it does have its virtues. Older anime fans will enjoy it simply because its a trip down memory lane and younger fans will likely get a kick out of its undying insistence to fight, fight, fight. A simple storyline so there's no real thinking required for this one but you'll enjoy all the same.

Guide Review - Anime Flashback: Ronin Warriors

When the evil emperor Talpa attempted to conquer the Earth, he was defeated and banished to the Nether Realm. His armor, full of demonic spirit was too powerful to leave in tact so the Ancient split it into 9 separate suits so that Talpa could not return.

Ah but return he does, and this time he's got four of his warlords with him. Talpa manages to reclaim four of the armor suits and gives them to the warlords to do his bidding. The other five suits are in the hands of the Ronin Warriors - Ryo, Sage, Cye, Kento and Rowen - five guys who hold the fate of the Earth in their hands.

Each armor is affiliated with a specific virtue (American/Japanese): Ryo - Virtue/Righteousness; Sage - Wisdom/Courtesy; Cye - Trust/Faith; Kento - Justice; Rowen - Life/Wisdom; Anubis (Dark Lord) - Loyalty; Cale (dark lord) - Obedience/Piety; Dais (dark lord) - Serenity/Endurance; and Sekhmet (dark lord) Piety/Obedience. The armors also have an affiliation with the elements (Fire, Light, Water, Earth, Air respectively) and the dark lords armors tie to Spring, Winter, Summer, Autumn. These elements give the wearer a power boost when needed and the armors allowed their owners to possess unique physical strengths and fighting techniques. To call the armor, the Ronin Warriors said "Dao" combined with their specific virtue (i.e., Dao Rei would mean "The way of Wisdom) for Sage.

The series spawned 39 episodes as well as some OVAs and while not considered to be a major anime classic, Ronin Warriors had quite the following. Appropriate for tweens and teens, Ronin Warriors is a fighting-extravaganza but don't worry - there's nothing overtly brutal about this anime. Combats are mostly the hand to hand (or should I say armor to armor?) stuff and is about as "violent" as the Power Rangers.

Even so, its still a good series, especially if you like the old fighting animes.
