The Bottom Line

If you're a Burst Angel fan (and I am), then you'll like having a little closure to a series that ended all too soon. That said, don't expect a full-fledge Burst Angel movie or even a series of episodes because that's not here. Its one episode - worth the watch mind you - but still, just one.

Pros

  • Exquisite cover art.
  • Lots of extras.
  • Sneak peak at the second season

Cons

  • The second season never happened.
  • All the extras aside, its only one episode.

Description

  • Release date: November 13, 2007
  • Running Time: Episode - 25 minutes; Extras - 110 minutes
  • Rating: 13+
  • Genres: Mecha, adventure, sci-fi, comedy

Guide Review - Burst Angel OVA: Infinity

Jo and Meg decide to return to New York City to visit Shirley, one of the orphans that Jo was especially fond of. And being that its Shirley's birthday, Jo and Meg decide to surprise her with a birthday present. But as luck would have it, Shirley has become the unfortunate victim of a cowardly slasher who preys on the less fortunate residents in the city. When Jo and Meg arrive, they discover that Shirley is in the hospital and her status is touch and go. To make matters worse, the loon who's responsible has yet to be caught. Sounds like a job for the girls, doesn't it?

If there's one thing that makes Burst Angel, its Jo. Breaking away from the whiny female sterotype, she is "moxie" incarnate. Of course, we still have Meg, which fulfills the stereotype I just referred to but its a little easier to take when you can root for Jo at the same time.

The cover art is gorgeous and the extras feature a few notables worth mentioning: the first is a battle record for all 24 episodes of the television series, providing a quick walk-through of the highlights of the series. The second nifty extra is a preview of the second season. What makes this interesting is that of course, the second season was never released.

This is not by any means, the big "comeback" that Burst Angel fans might be hoping for. Quite the contrary, its one episode - really, just one - and it doesn't really do justice to the surprisingly abrupt ending of the TV series.

That said, there is plenty of action from Jo and if you've been dying to see Meg get kidnapped one more time, the OVA certainly complies. It also still drips heavily with the Spaghetti Western influence that made Burst Angel such a delight so grab your bowl of popcorn and find a comfortable spot. Its a quick watch (unless you count the hour-plus worth of extras), but its a fun one all the same.
