In more than 350 communities, Success By 6 coalitions are changing the way things work so young children can come to school ready to succeed. Goal: “All children in our community are safe and healthy.”

In order for children to enter school prepared to be successful, we must protect them from abuse, neglect, and injuries that will negatively affect their physical, social-emotional, and mental development. In addition to being safe, it is critical that all children have health issues identified and addressed so that these possible barriers to education can be removed. More

Goal: “All parents and guardians of children in our community have the skills and resources needed to ensure that their children are safe, healthy, nurtured and prepared to succeed in school.”

The most important influence in the development of young children is their families. We work to support families’ efforts to ensure success for their children in two ways. When families have the knowledge, skills, and resources required to engage as their child’s first and best teacher, they become the most successful strategy for ensuring that children are prepared to enter kindergarten. Goal: “All children in our community experience quality early care and education opportunities.”

Every experience a child has before entering kindergarten impacts his or her early care and education. Increasing the quality of those experiences is critical to ensuring that all children are fully prepared to be successful in school. It is an extremely high priority to increase the affordability of and access to quality early care and education experiences, whether formal or informal. More

Getting Ready For Kindergarten

Goal: “All children and families in our community experience successful transitions to kindergarten.”

Throughout life, there are critical transition points that can dramatically impact future success for individuals and families. This is especially true for young children, birth to kindergarten entry, and their families. We believe that Metro United Way Success By 6 is uniquely positioned to focus on and impact the ease with which children and families transition into kindergarten. Because of the foundational role that kindergarten entry plays in the future school experience and relationship, and the critical connections that must be drawn between pre-kindergarten experience and formal kindergarten entry, this particular transition point is critical. Gheens Bridges To Tomorrow Initiative

Metro United Way Success By 6 is dedicated to ensuring that all children are safe, healthy, nurtured and prepared to succeed in kindergarten. We believe so strongly in the long term benefits of high quality early care and education that we recently committed to leading our community in assuring that by 2017 all children enter kindergarten prepared to succeed. We also understand that in order for children to be successful, families need the stability to encourage that success. Because of this we have embarked on the Gheens Bridges to Tomorrow Initiative to inspire families, community centers and the broader community to Dare to Dream Bigger! More
