Second batch preorders, first batch questions

July 14, 2010
Posted by: gruso

Good news for those who’ve been waiting to join the sitting around party. Second batch preorders have been open for several days now, with a number of forum members already paid up and strapped in for the ride. Assembly and delivery of these units is expected to roll on seamlessly from the first batch, which is estimated for completion in October. Full ordering details at openpandora.org.

The delivery of the parts for batch 2 is still October (I got an update last week), so it’s looking pretty good this time.

Just trying to get 4000 (second batch units) built and shipping before Christmas will be a fun challenge, but we hope the changes and tweaks to the assembly line will make 100+ units a day possible.

Now, for all us first batchers, a few clarifications on the whole queue thing.

Production status II, something about kittens

July 1, 2010

A word of advice to those still waiting for that magic delivery email: settle in with a hot mug of something, there are a few months left on this ride. Craig estimates that it will take until the beginning of October to get 4,000 out the door, at which point he hopes production will roll straight into batch 2 without hiatus. Looking further into the future, there is talk of bringing case production to the UK as well – but that’s a good 12,000 Pandoras away, and a topic for another day. In the meantime, the best we can do is wish the UK assembly line a speedy recovery, and try to stave off the cabin fever.

Production status

June 30, 2010

It’s a quiet week on the assembly front, with Craig now waiting for another lot of boards to arrive from Texas. EvilDragon answers some forum queries below.

Just a short summary so far:

About 650 – 700 should’ve been shipped (alltogether) – or will be shipped these days (as I’m shipping some more today).

There were a couple of things that slowed things down in the beginning:

* Lots of failed LCD Cables in the beginning after we assembled the lid. As we had all 4000 cables here, it didn’t prevent us to build the units… but it took a lot more time. As we now know what the problem was, this will be no slowdown anymore (last 200 lids we built only had one failed LCD cable )

Damn if this fella isn't wearing the face of the community right now.

Yes, we’re back, and no, we don’t want to talk about it. So let’s jump straight into a summary of Pandora’s best week so far (and Pandorapress’s worst!).

First shipping emails hit inboxes

May 21, 2010
Posted by: gruso

This is the email that a handful of lucky folk have received today. It’s a slow and steady start, but with Fatih due to arrive tomorrow, EvilDragon arriving on Monday, and other volunteers on the way including benevolent forum mod x68000, production should hit 88mph in no time. If you’ve received your confirmation email, insert gloat below!

Is your delivery address correct?

May 18, 2010
Posted by: gruso

So, Michael Weston is due to land in the UK in around 24hrs. Cause for excitement? Maybe – but that volcano continues to do its spewing thing over yonder, so the situation may still be a little fluid. Murphies and doom aside though, it’s probably a good time to double check that your delivery address is correct. If you have moved house since ordering, or you think getting your Pandora delivered to your workplace is a better idea, tireless GBAX frontwoman Jacquelyn will be happy to help you out. If you do need to change your address, include your order number, original address, and new address in your email.

What's new at Craig's house?

April 23, 2010

Boards and stickers, that’s what. UPS has dumped some boxes earlier than expected, with all the grace and accuracy of a Scud. With no mention of LCDs and other parts yet, it looks like Craig will be camped on the roof to see which neighbour gets the next delivery. Hit the first source link for all the fun.

Official status update

February 17, 2009

op

A status update has been posted on the official site. If any clarifications are required, we’ll add updates below. If you’d like to join the forum discussion, jump in here.

References have been added to the text and listed below. Much of this is pretty basic information, but if there’s one thing we’ve learned recently it’s that we shouldn’t assume that everyone knows every detail! As stated, this will be updated as necessary over the next day or so.

Without further ado, here’s the juice you’re waiting for…

Hi,

as everybody is waiting, I thought I’d post some status informations. I’ll keep them up-to-date here, so everybody knows what’s happening :)

To-Do:

* Get the final CNCed case (ETA Feb25) [1]
* Wait until the mould of the keymat is finished [2]
* Design the final keyboard layout [3]
* Create mould of final case (can be done once the case fits) [4]
* CE / FCC testing (can be done once the case is here) [5]
* Mass Production testrun for the final boards [6]
* Stability testing (this will be fun) [7]
* Wait for the last remaining pieces for mass production (LATEST deadline is second week of March) [8]
* Mass Production
* Test the boards
* SHIP THEM!

Please keep in mind that it also takes some time to ship.

It won’t help if the case is finished in China, it has to go to Michael and then to the CE / FCC testing company, etc. [9]

Okay, some more info about the mass production:

We want to have a 48 burn-in test for the boards. [10] The failure rate on the first boards depends on how many we’ll test! [11]

In worst case, we have to test ALL boards, which will take a month – don’t worry however, as we can have weekly shipments of the already tested and working boards so the first guys who have ordered don’t have to wait so long.

Let’s cross our fingers and hope there won’t be many problems from now on!

Notes:
[1] The CNC is the final prototype. About CNC
[2] The mould is the “cast” the factory will use for mass production. The physical keypad design is final, so the mould is being made.
[3] “Layout” refers to the key labels, fonts, etc. As per [2], there are no more physical design changes required.
[4] “Once the case fits” refers to the CNC case fitting together nicely.
[5] “Case” refers to the CNC case. Update: ED has posted some minor info on FCC/CE timeframe. The tests themselves only take a day or so, so they’re looking for a company who won’t make them wait too long. source
[6] A small number of Pandoras will be run off on the actual production line. (Exciting!)
[7] We’ll add details on this if/when we can.
[8] We’ll add details on this if/when we can.
[9] Corrected typo. “Case if finished” changed to “case is finished”.
[10] “48″ should read “48 hours”. This is common practice for burning in new PCB designs, as any bad components will generally show themselves in this period.
[11] Re-worded for clarification: “The failure rate on the first mass production test boards, will determine how many we will test during full production.” If the component failure rate during burn-in is high, they’ll have to do extended tests on all the boards that come off the line. If the failure rate is only a few percent (an accepted level for electronics), they’ll know the hardware is robust and won’t have to do 48hr tests on every board.
