Chinese online game company ZQGame has partnered with Los Angeles-based SEE Games to create, co-invest in, and publish an original MMO (massively multiplayer online) game based on Sony Pictures Entertainment’s 2012 summer event film, Total Recall (2012), starring Colin Farrell. The deal represents the first time a Hollywood entity has partnered with a game company from China to develop an online game in-full.

The Men In Black haven't always seen the greatest of times when it comes to movies.  The first one was excellent for sure...but the second, not so much.  But they've had even less success in video games, with the last release, Alien Escape, barely getting any attention on the GameCube and PS2.  But hopefully Activision will turn that around next year, as the company is working on a new game in the series to tie in with the upcoming Men In Black III film, which releases next summer.

Electronic Arts and Sports Illustrated have extended their marketing relationship, which debuted this year with Madden NFL 12. The game giant and sports magazine are melding  the internationally renowned Need for Speed and Swimsuit franchises bringing together the worlds of fashion, video games, cars and beauty in a first-of-its-kind partnership. The deal will see 2011 SI Swimsuit Cover model Irina Shayk and popular Swimsuit model Chrissy Teigen play guest starring roles in Need for Speed The Run. The action-packed racing game takes players on a heart-pounding cross-country race from San Francisco to New York. In addition, the partnership powers a new SI subscription bundled offer featuring Need for Speed The Run assets and both EA and SI will execute significant cross-promotion across in-game, TV and social media.

Rovio is officially going Hollywood. The game developer from Helsinki has big plans for its Angry Birds franchise. The latest move is the hiring of Andrew Stalbow as General Manager of North America. In his previous role as Senior Vice President of Mobile at Fox Digital Entertainment, Andrew was responsible for app publishing and video licensing for 20th Century Fox properties such as Glee, Avatar and The Simpsons, and worked with Rovio on the development of the Angry Birds Rio game, a unique integration between Angry Birds and the Fox film Rio.

Unicomm and The Bob Dowling Group have announced speakers and sessions for the second annual 3D Gaming Summit: 3D Gaming and Beyond presented in association with Variety. Scheduled for Thursday, September 22, 2011 at the Hollywood & Highland Center, Hollywood, CA, the new summit will take place the same week as the 3D Entertainment Summit and LA Mobile Entertainment Summit. The gaming summit is expanding beyond 3D this year to look at some of the hottest sectors of games, including cloud gaming, mobile game and augmented reality.  Producers have also confirmed Mick Hocking, Vice President of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios, as a featured speaker. Hocking oversees all 3D game development for Sony.

With Captain America: The First Avenger in movie theaters around the world today and Sega’s tie-in, Captain America: Super Soldier, available for all platforms; the synergy for Marvel Entertainment’s newest mainstream property is perfect. In fact, Captain America has taken over Comic-Con 2011 to fan boys' delight. But all signs are pointing to Captain America being the last Marvel movie that will be licensed out to an external company like Sega. The Walt Disney Company purchased Marvel in 2009 for $4 billion and now its game division, Disney Interactive Media Group (DIMG), is heading up all video game projects.

At Microsoft's press conference earlier this week at E3, they announced that XBox Live will be getting an extreme makeover, so to speak. The interface will have a much simpler arrangement, making all of the content much more accessible without fumbling through too many menus. The service will also see some changes with several services such as YouTube and Bing being added to the fold. The new XBox Live will also include the ability to watch live TV for the first time on the console. With all of this and more being added to XBox Live, will there be a price increase to the subscription?

Rick Dean, a senior vice president at George Lucas’ THX Ltd. and resident 3D guru, spoke at the annual spring Digital Hollywood Conference in Los Angeles. He discussed how he sees the future of 3D unfolding a pioneers like James Cameron and Vince Pace push new 3D technology into the space, and new movies like Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and Thor hit theaters this summer. THX is currently involved in the 3D re-release of the Star Wars films, which will hit theaters early next year.

The Weinstein Company (TWC) is the latest Hollywood studio to jump into the video game space with the launch of TWC Games. This new label will utilize The Weinstein Company and Dimension Films' most recognizable properties like Scream, Hellraiser, Halloween, Scary Movie and Children of the Corn, and work with external partners to develop and publish video games for mobile, social, and console platforms. Scream 4 will be hitting theaters next month.

Sony Computer Entertainment America and Polyphony Digital, in collaboration with Nissan North America, announced the final 16 contestants moving on to the last round of GT Academy, ready to compete for the opportunity to become a part of a professional race team.  The 16 finalists emerged from a group of more than 53,000 registrants as the top racers from the National Finals Event held at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World Resort on March 22-23.  They will now travel to the well-known Silverstone racing circuit in the United Kingdom to participate in a week-long boot camp in June.  The top driver will become the official GT Academy winner for the U.S. and will have the opportunity to train with elite race car drivers and compete as part of a professional Nissan racing team in an undisclosed race.

With Apple’s iPad 2 launch putting the focus on tablets, new data shows just how popular these devices are becoming with consumers. According to the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Media Tablet and eReader Tracker, 10.1 million media tablets were shipped in the fourth quarter of 2010 - more than double the 4.5 million shipped in the third quarter. Apple's share came down from 93% in Q3 2010 to 73% in Q4 2010, but still reflected Apple's strong leadership position with its iPad. Samsung's Galaxy Tab was the primary competitor in the holiday season, beating other players to market and capturing more than 17% share, while a number of smaller regional players also participated. New tablets running on Tegra 2 technology will flood the market place this year.

SAN FRANCISCO, California -- Gameloft, a leading developer and publisher of digital and online games, has signed a long-term, multi-platform licensing agreement with Epic Games that enables Gameloft to incorporate Unreal Engine 3 in four new games, two to be released in 2011 and two in 2012. The new games will be developed for the next generation of Android and Apple smartphones and tablets, as well as set-top boxes and PlayStation Network.
