Dragon’s Lair is one of those games that could be considered an immortal classic.  It got its start way back in 1983, when laser disc technology was king (we’re talking the big flipper discs, not the Blu-Rays as you know them now) and Don Bluth’s animation shined down on arcades, ushering in an interesting new technology that took the gaming scene by storm.  Now, almost 30 years later, the game lives on through Digital Leisure’s re-releases, and the company has confirmed that it’s now coming to Xbox Live Arcade – with a twist.

In news that could shift how game developers and healthcare professionals harness the power of videogames to do good, HopeLab and Stanford University researchers today announced new data showing that Re-Mission, a video game about killing cancer in the body, strongly activates brain circuits involved in positive motivation. This reward-related activation is associated with a shift in attitudes and emotions that has helped boost players’ adherence to prescribed chemotherapy and antibiotic treatments in a previous study. The study published today provides new insights into how these effects might have occurred, revealing that active participation in gameplay events is key to activating the brain’s positive motivation circuits. Seeing and hearing the same information without active participation in gameplay had no impact on activity in positive motivation circuits.

I know Pierre already has his thoughts posted on FIFA Street, but I felt compelled to follow up with a counterpoint.  After all, EA Sports’ arcade revival is a pretty big deal, especially in the face of FIFA Soccer 12, which is essentially a perfected version of the sport digitally, right down to the league options and style of play on the field.  FIFA Street is an opposite to that, relying on a more trick-laden fast-paced style where the yellow and red cards don’t apply, and it’s all about getting the ball in the goal.  That should be good enough, right?  So why isn’t it?

Fans of soccer, soccer video games, and FIFA especially should be excited for FIFA Street. Excited not just for the game, but for the page turned by its parent franchise—the exaggerated style of past iterations has been put on the shelf in favor of sober depiction, though that isn't where the game pans out as a great sports experience.
