Free mobile apps monetised with in-app advertising drain more battery than their paid equivalents, a new study has found. The Microsoft Research study looked at six free apps on Windows Phone and Android, and found that between 65 and 75 per cent of the apps' energy consumption was used by thirdparty advertising solutions. Mark Rein, vice president of Unreal Engine creator Epic Games, says he will be "shocked" if Nintendo's new console, Wii U, doesn't do well. Speaking to Eurogamer at GDC last week, Rein said Wii U - which was unveiled at E3 last year and will be shown off at this year's conference ahead of a release later in 2012 - was much changed from what was unveiled last year. 1Epic Games has shown off the progress it has made running Unreal Engine in Flash, saying that its long-term goal is to run the Samaritan demo in Adobe's technology. Speaking during a GDC presentation, Epic Games VP Mark Rein showed off Dungeon Defenders running in full screen just as well as it does on PS3, according to Gamesindustry.biz. Autodesk has announced a licence agreement with Nintendo that will enable developers of Wii U games to use its Gameware technology. Announced at GDC in San Francisco, the deal gives Nintendo and its licensed developers access to popular UI solution Autodesk Scaleform, the Autodesk Kynapse AI middleware, and Autodesk HumanIK, used for interactive character animation.
