Rumor: Valve May Be Working On A Home Console

Last month, Gabe Newell, the boss-man over at Valve, was quoted as saying, "if we have to sell hardware we will." That sentiment may be closer to fruition than we all realized.

TheVerge.com has uncovered a number of  difficult to verify, but believable rumors that all point to Valve entering the hardware race very soon. Apparently, Valve is working on spec hardware and software that other manufacturers would be able to license that will play PC games and support the Steam distribution system. Valve would be designing the hardware and software, but other companies would be producing it, sort of along the lines of DVD player technology. This would make Valve's hardware an open system much like what Google has been doing with Android phones. There are rumors that Alienware has already begun designing early prototypes.

The system will be open to many assorted controller inputs, but Valve filed a patent last year for a customizable controller with swappable control sticks, so it's likely that something like that would be the controller that would be included with the system.

The system is also rumored to incorporate biometric scanning at feedback, meaning Valve's system could be monitoring things like where the player is looking and what their pulse rate is, and incorporate that data into game design.

If this is all to be believed, which seems like an exciting prospect to me, we could hear something more concrete as early as next week at GDC, or a little bit later at E3.

None of these details have been confirmed by Valve, so file all of this under rumor, but it certainly makes sense. A fourth player in the console war, especially from a company like Valve who likes to open things up as much as possible to any and all interested applicants, could be a great thing. It also makes makes me wonder about Half-Life 3. When Half-Life 2 released, part of the deal of getting to play it was that you had to download Steam. Valve used Half-Life 2 as a way to get people to start using Steam. You know what a great way to get me to invest in a new home console would be? Putting Half-Life 3 on it.

  • we want half life 3 not some new console that will prob. flop
  • I wonder how Valve will fare as a hardware manufacturer rather than software.
  • No. Don't. PC is fine, Valve. Don't be dumb.

Also 4chan's /v/ is probably going to make fun of Valve MORE now.

After all, 4chan's /v/ were the same people who started all the Gabe Newell Meme's.
  • Sounds cool but I wouldn't be on board just because Half Life 3 is on it. At the behest of enraging fans I played 2 and didn't see what the big deal was about. Not saying it was bad, just saying it didnt make me jump out of my seat.
  • No thanks. It sounds interesting and all, especially the biometric integration, but; regardless no thanks.
If we could get some cooperativeness from the existing consoles and less exclusive games on all of them, I'd be happy. I'm happy to spend money on 1-2 consoles, but I wont have more than that.

What's next? Epic making a console?
...ok that actually sounds like a good idea. Though Epic has already pretty much cornered the market with their engine.... which if they made a console... they could.... force all other gaming consoles companies out of BUSINESS!!!!! OMG NOOOOOOOOO!!!! NUUUUUUUUUU!!!!!!!!!!!
  • I don't mind this rumor at all. It's a risky move if the rumor is true, but if the system is impressive and has good support, I would not mind supporting Valve as a console manufacturer if it included Steam support. I have no problem with someone else entering the console market, I just think it's a very risky move with MS, Sony, and Nintendo having such a stronghold.
  • Possibly this is their reaction to OnLive? They have to be intrigued by the service, and it's even more convenient than worrying if you hardware will be up to snuff. Certainly a long shot, but also certainly possible.
  • Anything more advanced would be awesome. The current platforms are running out of steam (no pun intended) in my opinion. So my interest is fading as the new games coming out are basically the same as games already on the market with alterations in graphics and mapping. It would be great if the AI could advance to make the games more challenging also. Cool graphics are essential, but the AI needs vast improvement. Maybe the technology just isn't there yet. Or maybe I just need to advance to Alienware products (I wish I could sample the performance of Alienware before purchasing though).
  • could be a smart move, i mean we all know consoles are what kept/keeps gaming alive, so why wouldnt they wanna jump on the bandwagon
  • i'd buy one, i love valve and even tho they would probably make 2 consoles and then tease us with a third for years it doesnt make the first two any less enjoyable and i would have been glad to play them (hint hint) XD

  • If it plays pc games and people who own pcs play pc games what's the incentive? Also I don't want a console that knows I stare at all the characters crotches the whole time. (kidding) or am I?
  • This feels just a little too.... rumory.... I suppose its possible, but if it is it's a completely different team than HL3, so don't worry.

  • Very interesting. I would probably buy it given how many Steam games I have, how bad my computer is, and the constant sales that they host.
  • i want it! real bad

  • This is like a dream come true.

  • Interesting...quite interesting. Though I wish they'd just put all their focus and resources on their game development. That is if this is true.

But never-the-less, I'm quite intrigued since they do have some brilliant and creative minds over at Valve.

  • I wouldn't call myself a blatant Steam fanboy, but considering the fact I've been happy with their service (and games) for a number of years now, I'm more than willing to give them a chance and see what they can do. Doesn't mean I'm automatically on board though. I'd still greatly prefer HL3 to another console system.

  • Sounds cool, but I definitely hope they would allow numerous publishers to put their games on the system.
  • that would be cool

  • Feels like a dream cast event to me, we'll see though. The technology they want to incorporate would be pretty awesome.
