News: Wii To Enjoy 'Fantastic' 2011 - Nintendo

Nintendo promises a strong 2011 for Wii with "fantastic new experiences" on the way later this year...

3DS may be out on shelves and doing pretty business, but Nintendo stresses they're keen to maximise their current home console.

Speaking to CVG Nintendo UK's James Honeywell responded to the rather tame nature of Wii's sales over the past year.

"We've been really pleased with Wii and how it has performed. It's the market leader in the UK by some margin. I think it has been proven really that it is Britain's favourite home console with a huge install base. But obviously as you reach a certain level things perhaps might slow down, but again we've got a really strong line-up, we're really proud with what we've achieved in getting it into so many homes, and we've have a strong campaign for promotion this year and think it will continue as a strong viable format."

Nintendo of Europe has already confirmed the long-awaited Xenoblade will be seeing localisation later this year. But even adding that to The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, the official Wii schedule is a tad thin. Just how many cards are Nintendo holding to their chest?

"I guess we haven't made any announcements recently because we've been concentrating on the 3DS launch, but there are still lots of games to come. I'm sure you'll see at this year's E3. For anybody who has a Wii, they can rest assured that we'll be bringing some fantastic new experiences to them."

Satoru Iwata spoke earlier in the year of plenty of unannounced Wii titles that were in the works. It remains to be seen whether we'll see the mysteriously reclusive Pandora's Tower, Mistwalker's The Last Story or HAL's new Kirby game this year, but we sense 2011 will produce one or two other surprises. It just seems we'll have to wait for E3 before we really learn what Wii's 2011 is going to look like.

What would you like to see on the system this year? Drop us a comment as per usual...

All I would like to see for 2011 is The Last Story to be localised as well on top of Xenoblade and Skyward Sword. Everything else, to me, is a much welcomed bonus.

Along with all the surprises, I hope that 'Rhythm Paradise Wii' will get a release date for Europe.

All I want now is Zelda, Xenoblade, Last Story and Dragon Quest X (I suppose not this year). That'll be perfect.

owning both a 3ds and a wii i don't mind the lull in the first 6 months of the year for wii because the 3ds will keep me going, i think the second half of the year is going to be pretty decent for wii tho

seriously? No april fools this one? Wow some people still have the guts to talk big with nothing to back it up. How on earth did we go from the huge lineup of 2010 to the absolute dryness of 2011 is beyond me. Plus games like Wii party, flingsmash and sports mix lowered the bar of Nintendo published games considerably.

Some would argue that some games are better than no games but those are just lazy cash ins with Nintendo basically saying "buy a 3DS NOW" but I want to stick to my Wii for a while longer sorry N.
