I'm just going to get it out there, the Bioshock Infinite video demo was one of the most exciting things I saw at E3 2011. In this alternate timeline, the floating city became militarily involved in the Boxer Rebellion, killing many innocent civilians. The United States disowned the floating city, and it took to the clouds and out of the public eye. For years it was spoken of as a legend or "Boogie Man" to scare children.
