SAN FRANCISCO, California - The Game Audio Network Guild (G.A.N.G.), the non-profit organization dedicated to the advancement and recognition of game audio, awarded the winners of the 9th Annual G.A.N.G. Awards held at the 25th Annual Game Developers Conference  (GDC 2011). Red Dead Redemption, Battlefield: Bad Company 2, and Halo: Reach took home prizes. SAN FRANCISCO -- While promoting its upcoming first-person shooter game Homefront at a staged rally, THQ released 10,000 helium-filled propaganda balloons. The only problem is that the balloons quickly came back down and many fell into the San Francisco Bay as it was raining and also because the balloons were weighed down by a Gamestop coupon for a Homefront multiplayer pack with a bonus in-game weapon. Local environmentalists were not amused, calling the stunt "polluting and littering." THQ claimed the balloons "were made from a 100% organic product and are 100% biodegradable." SAN FRANCISCO, California – Epic Games had a big GDC 2011 with new technology shown at their booth that pushes Unreal Engine 3 technology forward. The game maker announced that the closed beta for Gears of War 3 will begin on April 18 for anyone who bought the Xbox 360 Bulletstorm Epic Edition of the game. Anyone who pre-orders Gears will be able to jump into the online action on April 25. The beta will end on May 15, which will give the studio plenty of time to fine-tune the online multiplayer gameplay before the fall launch of the Microsoft Xbox 360 exclusive game. SAN FRANCISCO, California – Electronic Arts is readying more Battlefield games from Sweden. The publisher used GDC 2011 to debut the new DICE Battlefield 3 game, but those looking for free gamplay can soon play Battlefield Play4Free. The entertainment company behind Spongebob Squarepants and Dora the Explorer is introducing its huge kids and family audience to a brand new MMO experience, which is free to play and offers microtransactions for those who want to dive deeper into the console-style gameplay.

SAN FRANCISCO, California – At GDC 2011, Sony Computer Entertainment was on hand to show developers the new NGP (Next Generation PlayStation) system technology in hopes of getting support for its new portable, which ships this fall. But at U.S. retail stores, Sony slashed the prices of its current PSP models. Sony’s PSP-3000 models, which use the universal media disc (UMD), now sell for $130 and the PSP Go, which is completely digital, now retails for $150.

SAN FRANCISCO, California – One of the driving themes at GDC 2011 is the growth of casual games beyond the traditional gaming audience. Today, nearly half (46 percent) of social gamers are at least 50 years old and dominated by women, according to recent social gaming research from casual game developer Popcap Games.  The average social gamer in the U.S. is a 48-year-old woman. In fact, 20 percent of social gamers were 60 or older. Social gaming is a fast-growing pastime for older Americans.This discovery reveals an interesting trend among older Americans and opens up a new opportunity for game developers.

SAN FRANCISCO, California -- PrimeSense, a leader in sensing and recognition technologies, announced the winners of its OpenNI Developer Challenge at the Game Developer Conference  (GDC 2011) taking place at the Moscone Center. SAN FRANCISCO, California – At GDC 2011, Portal 2 developer Valve Software announced a new Steam and Steamworks feature called Steam Guard, which gives users greatly increased account security. Steam Guard allows users to link management of their account to a specific PC. Attempts to modify or change account settings by any other PC won't be possible without the user's approval.

Following the successful and award-winning EA Partners program, EA will be expanding its partnership programs for Chillingo and Playfish furthering the delivery of fresh content to platforms such as the Apple App Store, Google Android and Facebook.
