When the Warren Spector-produced Epic Mickey arrived for Wii last year, it introduced an innovative new platformer featuring the iconic Disney character -- and also created a slight uproar when other console owners were left out in the cold.  Regardless, it was a well-produced adventure, leaving the door open for a possible sequel.  Well, according to a possible leaked newsletter report, we could be getting one around next fall -- and this time, all console owners will be considered.

The Disney Universe is a vast one, filled with memories from great movies of the past, as well as current projects that are just as appealing, including Pixar-produced films and last year’s Tron Legacy.  Now that universe is being explored for a new game released through Disney Interactive, titled, fittingly enough, Disney Universe.  And while it’s got all sorts of stuff that kids and a few nostalgists may enjoy, the shallow gameplay keeps it from being as magical as, say, a visit to Disneyland.

With Captain America: The First Avenger in movie theaters around the world today and Sega’s tie-in, Captain America: Super Soldier, available for all platforms; the synergy for Marvel Entertainment’s newest mainstream property is perfect. In fact, Captain America has taken over Comic-Con 2011 to fan boys' delight. But all signs are pointing to Captain America being the last Marvel movie that will be licensed out to an external company like Sega. The Walt Disney Company purchased Marvel in 2009 for $4 billion and now its game division, Disney Interactive Media Group (DIMG), is heading up all video game projects.

Despite a recent string of down months in U.S. video game sales at retail this year, a new report from research firm Gartner paints a very rosy picture for the global video game industry. When adding in revenues from burgeoning online, mobile and digital gaming sectors, Gartner estimates that worldwide spending on the gaming ecosystem will exceed $74 billion in 2011, up 10.4 percent from the $67 billion spent last year. Disney and Marvel Studios have set summer 2013 as the target for Iron Man 2 (May 3) and Thor 2 (July 26). With new movies on the way, the question remains whether Disney Interactive Studios will take over the video games for these franchises, as well as The Avengers. Sega has released games based on the first Iron Man and Thor film, as well as the upcoming Captain America.

Pixar's sequel to the blockbuster hit Cars opens up in theaters today with high anticipation. While I wasn't a big fan of the original Cars film, I will be attending a viewing of the film sometime this week with high hopes that I will have restored faith in the franchise. Reviews have been quite dismal despite an impressive showing at the box office. However, some of that faith is already restored after spending some time with the new outing from Disney Interactive, Cars 2: The Video Game.

The Entertainment Software Association (ESA) welcomed the U.S. Supreme Court’s landmark ruling that underscored constitutional protections for video games, developers, and video game industry artists. At issue was a 2005 California statute restricting the sale and rental of computer and video games. The ESA, the lead party in the case Brown v. Entertainment Merchants Association/Entertainment Software Association, argued that the statute presented unconstitutional limitations on expression, and the U.S. Supreme Court agreed, holding the California law unconstitutional under the First Amendment.
