Pixar's sequel to the blockbuster hit Cars opens up in theaters today with high anticipation. While I wasn't a big fan of the original Cars film, I will be attending a viewing of the film sometime this week with high hopes that I will have restored faith in the franchise. Reviews have been quite dismal despite an impressive showing at the box office. However, some of that faith is already restored after spending some time with the new outing from Disney Interactive, Cars 2: The Video Game.

Pixar Animation remains the leader of the pack when it comes to computer-animated blockbusters. The studio earned its 12th consecutive box office debut – winning the top spot for every one of its movies. John Lasseter’s Cars 2 drove over $110.9 million at the global box office, despite bad reviews. NEW YORK – In what was supposed to be one of the weakest NBA Drafts in years, ESPN’s telecast of the 2011 NBA Draft drew record ratings. In fact, big names over the past three years couldn’t compete with Kyrie Irving, Derrick Williams, Jimmer Fredette, and Brandon Knight, as NBA fans tuned in to see the next class of big men. With the cloud of an NBA lockout hanging over the Prudential Center, the NBA was able to build on the increased success it’s had on the court throughout this season. Detroit Red Wings center Pavel Datsyuk's bid for a fourth consecutive Frank Selke Trophy but was denied by Vancouver Canucks center Ryan Kesler, who finished second to Datsyuk in 2010. Kesler helped the Canucks record the lowest team goals-against average in the NHL (2.20) for the first time in franchise history. He ranked fourth among NHL forwards in blocked shots (80), appeared in all 82 games and averaged a career-high 20:29 in ice time to lead all Vancouver forwards. Pixar’s Cars franchise is the most successful merchandising property for Disney today, thanks in large part to Larry the Cable Guy’s Mater. As if Sonic's birthday couldn't have been a big blast as it is, rumors over what the full level list of Sonic Generations are popping up. A few people took some extra time to feed their curiosity over the new game by hacking into the demo's code to see what they could find. What they did manage to find were files inside the code named after several stages in the various Sonic the Hedgehog games, and are believed to be the levels we will see in Sonic Generations.

NEW YORK – Former University of Arizona Wildcat Derrick Williams was in the Big Apple for the 2011 NBA Draft. The 6-foot-8 forward was Arizona's most eye-opening player in 2009-10, leading the Wildcats in scoring (15.7 ppg), rebounding (7.1 rpg) and field goal percentage (.574). Williams talks about his love of video games and what he thinks his player ratings should be in NBA 2K 12 in the video interview below.

NEW YORK -- Duke Univeristy point guard Kyrie Irving is projected to be the top draft pick in the 2011 NBA Draft in New Jersey. Irving talks to Gamerlive.tv about being in 2K Sports’ upcoming NBA 2K12 basketball game. Irving is planning to play himself a lot in the new video game, while bumping his player ratings to 99 across the board. He also talks about the fact that he thinks he is a cross between Chris Paul and Chauncy Billups, but he's no Lebron James. It was just like yesterday he made his debut on the Sega Genesis, but time surely has flied by fast. But as opposed to you buying him a present, Sega gives gamers the gift as they officially announce the release of the Sonic Generations demo. However, it's available only for a limited time!

Electronic Arts revealed at the 2011 NHL Awards hosted at the Pearl Concert Theater in the Palms Hotel in Las Vegas, that Steven Stamkos of the Tampa Bay Lightning will be the new face of the EA Sports NHL 12 video game. Stamkos’ image will appear on packaging worldwide when NHL 12 hits retail stores this September.

John Lasseter actually got the idea for the spy theme used extensively in the new Disney Interactive Studios and Avalanche Software Cars 2 video game back with the original film. He had to cut a scene at a drive-in featuring a car spy movie, but he kept that idea in the back of his head and incorporated it into the new movie. Then the game creatives took the concept of CHROME and designed an entire stand-alone video game around it.

On Thursday, June 23rd, one of gaming’s greatest icons, Sonic the Hedgehog will celebrate his 20th anniversary.  The recognizable blue hedgehog first appeared in 1991 with the debut of the Sega Genesis 16-Bit console and quickly became a household name.  In the 20 years that Sonic the Hedgehog videos games have been available, Sonic has become one of the best selling and most well-known characters in video gaming history.
